Kruzr gave you a good place to start.
There are various versions of the 1911 gun made in calibers from .22LR all the way up to .50 caliber. Barrel lengths run from 3" for micro compact type guns to 6" for long slide versions.
Government Model - full size frame, 7-8 round mag, 5" barrel
Commander Model - full size frame, 7-8 round mag, 4.25" barrel
Officers - shortened frame, 6-7 round mag, 3.5" barrel
Defender - compact version, 6 round mag, 3" barrel
The names given are specific to the Colt brand and the ammo capacities are for the 45ACP. However, these are the most common sizes and each manufacturer will have something comparable, with slight variations. Springfield for example calls their mid size gun the Champion an the barrel is 4" rather than the 4.25" of the Colt.
Those are the basics. For more details go to the site Kruzr suggested and read everything.
Then start saving your money, because after you understand them, you'll want one.
