I have a thing for knives. I usually don't buy the high dollar tactical, opting for good useful knives. However, the Gerber Emerson Alliance caught my attention. In the ad, the fine print states, " strictly for law enforecement and military use". What about the rest of us? Sort of makes me mad.

Well, I think they say that because it's an automatic knife, which are generally restricted to military/LE (waaaay stupid laws, I know)- But if you can legally carry an automatic- these are fine.

I can own one, but not carry it... But I would on the sailboat where a fast opening serated blade is handy. Also on my person when hunting. Fumbling for a folding knife while holding down the head of a wounded deer in the rain, in the middle of a privet patch, is a bitch Granted this knife isn't for dressing game, those knifes are in the truck.

While I collect autos I would not recommend one around saltwater due to rust. If you took it apart and gooped the guts you might keep it in working order, but a manual won't have the potential problems that a springer might.

Myerchin has been making knives for sailors for years and the feel and work great.

David Boyd makes dendritic cobalt alloy knives for waltwater sailing that have a lovely artistic flare.

Spyderco and Boker both make knives that are supposed to work well in saltwater environments.
