Is Your Range Bag A Mess???

Ya know I had this idea (a dumb one based on past experience) when I got my new Dillon range bag last year that I would have a clean, organized range bag...ya know lots of pockets....
Now I am finding empty oddball cases, dirty patches, mags mixed together, dumped my Brownells thin bits on the bottom, ripped targets, the paper off of target pasters a few loose asprin, loose staples...rounds for guns I dont have..
Is it just me being the slob..or is it a time warp and this stuff is appearing out of another dimension??

My old range bag used to be pretty cluttered, there were more than a few .22lr rounds in every pocket, and lots of inserts from empty boxes of .223. But now I moved to a new bag thats alot nicer that I haven't taken out yet, so it's still pretty clean. Also gotta love the fact that I got it from my school, it's even got the school name and logo on the side.

Lets just say there's one pocket in my range bag that I don't go into anymore. I had the bag in the back of my truck, when a full can of coke exploded next to it. Instead of cleaning it up right away, I put the bag in the garage. The pocket I'm referring to has a bunch of loose .22 shells, loose #7 1/2 shot, staples, used ear plugs, pencils, all stuck together in a sticky carmely mess like some kind of freakish snack mix.
The rest of the bag looks about the same, sans the dried soda.

I suppose this is the reverse of those situations similiar to the one missing sock. Somehow, you will always lose ONE sock to a pair. Never, never both.
Yes, my range bag is a mess. Cleaning it up is on my TO-DO list that will be rectified uhm, someday. Since I don't want to buy a specialized bag with a billion pockets, I've started using ziplock baggies. Seems to be working thus far. A baggie of earplugs, baggies of various spent brass, etc etc.

My Black powder 'possibles bag' is very neat and clean, though I can't seem to stuff everything I could 'possibly' need to shoot my flintlock in it.

I have found that FEWER pockets leads to a more organized life. That and i empty my range bag out after every trip. That way i am sure to have what i need without lugging around a bunch of crap that i dont.
Now the trunk of my car on the otherhand...

Used my range bag on a trip to FL this spring... went to a range, then the next day used it to carry stuff on a wild boar hunt since all the ammo was in there anyway. Went to get the coolers out of the truck to pack the meat in and I sat the range bag on the ground.
I turned around to see one of the guides' Florida curs lift his leg on the corner of my Smith and Wesson range bag. :cuss:
Field report: that Codura seems to repel a few quick squirts of dog urine pretty well. Seemed to wipe clean with a paper towel, but I still really need to empty the bag and clean it properly. :barf:

I finally got into the habit of emptying my range bag after a session at the same time as performing gun cleaning and brass bagging.

Yep. Got into the habit of cleaning the range box while cleaning my barrels, all ammo comes out and gets returned to my ammo box, replenish patches, plugs etc so I know its ready for the next trip.
Nothing worse than getting to the range and having to waste time digging around a bunch of crap looking for something. Worse is digging around looking for something that ain't there because "I thought I put it in there"

I see we have a conflict here between the "Clean it out when it smells like a trench at Verdun in 1916" crowd and the "My bag is so clean you could perfrom brain surgery in it without infection" crowd...wonder if there is a political correlation?

Yup. My dad and I's range bag is full of target .22, loose 7 1/2 12 gauge, boxes of empty .410 shells, bottles of Breakfree, staples, assorted tools including a screwdriver and staple gun....the list goes on. All jumbled up in a mess.

Oh, yeah, let's see: scribbled my name and address on it, burn marks from rifle fire, table for a .308, 6.5 Swede, .338 WM, spilled 1/4 bottle of Kellube in bag in Tejas, range gravel, river clay, loose .22 rounds, cotton swabs used to lube or clean, and Kotex (unused, just in case any new holes develop at the range) and duct tape (supra). Of course, not really a gear queer, but, hey, it's either stay at the office or play range bag.:D

My range bag isnt too bad.
Got speed strips, ear plugs and glasses in right pocket.
Left pocket has gun oil, Rem Oil, 2 boresnakes, multipliers and a small punch.
Top pocket has springs, followers and literature.
Forward pocket has patches, cotton swabs, allen wrenches, borelight, scrub brush and small screwdriver.
Inside aft has ammo and mags.
Inside forward carries pistols in holsters.
Overall its pretty neat if you dont mind the few empty shell casings on the bottom of the pockets.

Let's see: oddball reloaded rounds from someone whom I've now forgotten, targets that date back at least five years, short lengths of staples that don't fit the staple gun I use now, bits of paper towelling, a sheet of backing paper for the orange stickies that doesn't have any orange stickies on it, an unopened pack of ear plugs that are hard as a rock by now, a range membership badge dated 1993...
Nope, no condoms, though. :neener:

Which one? :D I have four: One general range bag, I keep the earmuffs and spare glasses in that, two sets of binos, 8x and 16x, and my Kel-Tec 9mm SUB2000 when I'm shooting at home, (I put it in a case to be legal when I go somwhere with it.) Also in there are targets (Velocitor .22 Targets that came with a box of .22's my 10 year old had to have, and the standard Sodam Insane and Osama Bin Shot targets), stapler, and staples.
Then there is the *ommph* ammo bag. Odds n' ends I bring to the range when I go, so if someone offers their gun to shoot, (I always do), I have ammo so I don't burn theirs. (Currently, a box of .223, a box of .45LC, 100rds. of 7.62x39. Extra shotgun shells that don't fit in the ammo boxes, (one or two Value Paks, and a 20rd. box of Mini-Shells, two boxes of .410, and five boxes of .410 slugs), four bricks of .22 in the side pockets, and two web belts and a holster.
Then there is my Mosin bag. This is a smaller, map case size bag where I keep my two ammo pouches, the other eight stripper clips full, a belt 20 rd. ammo carrier, and five or six full boxes of 7.62x54R.
And finally my blackpodwer bag, which holds everything for all my blackpowders. (Two Hawkens and two cap-ball revolvers). It is an Army pilot's helmet bag, and is also my 'gun show bag' Inside it is my 'possibles bag', which is a two-quart canteen holder with the strap on it. It hold my 'Essentials' , pick, capper, quick loaders for hunting, and caps and patches. I try to keep them clean; matter of fact, I went through them last night, and my wife commented, "Man, you have an arsenal in there!" Good thing she didn't see the ammo cans and crates!
I don't need any condoms for my range bags; I had a vasectomy!:p

Actually, I am very happy to say that I keep mine clean. I keep it stocked with eyes/ears, targets and hand cleaner. All I have to do is insert guns and ammo and I am ready to roll. I will admit that I find the occassional spent brass, but other than that, its clean and organized.

My range bag is halfway between total chaos and controlled chaos (kind of like the rest of my life, but that's a different tale).
Last week, I noticed it was getting way too dang heavy. So I rummaged through and took out a couple of items, tidying the rest as I went along.
Next day, I was at the range and really needed two of the items I'd removed.
I put them back in, and took out two other things I hadn't used in months.
Two days later, I was at the range and really needed one of the items I'd just removed.
There's a reason my bag's got a lotta stuff in it...

I have a pistol box strictly for bullseye shooting, and that stays pretty neat. My range bag, on the other hand, tends to go from neatly organized to levels of chaos that would cause Cthulu to cringe. This is because at any given time my range bag may be pulling duty holding all my stuff for a rifle match one day, or holding various random calibers and magazines for an informal plinking session the next. You just never know...

I'm glad to see Tejon carrying stuff to stop accidental leaks too. I thought I was the only one. I carry ABD pads, lap sponges, and a couple of tampons in addition to my first aid kit in mine.
Right now I need to wash my secondary range bag; the cat seems to have made a bed in it. At least the only thing I have in there are a brick of .22's and the Incubus' hearing protection (these smell funny and they're sticky, Rabbit...)
My primary bag is usually cleaned out and repacked after each 'good' trip to the range. Currently it has nothing but ready-to-go ammo (currently .308, 9mm and 357sig), my muffs and shooting glasses, the big stapler, the first aid kit, compact binoculars, pad and pencil, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, and a couple of dollars in change for the drink machine.
Regards,
Rabbit.

I use an old JanSport backpack as a range bag. Very innocent looking carrier, doesn't scream gun. Mine is a mess after about 2-3 trips, empty ammo boxes lots of brass I'll never reload, old targets, ear plugs and such. But I'm a pig so it doesn't bother me too much.

I suggest all you range bag slobs watch "Full Metal Jacket". Then, stand in front of the mirror and verbally abuse yourself a little by using some of the drill sargant's lines. That should motivate to put your range bag in order, jump up, and salute yourself, again in front of the mirror.:D
Serously...it's an eternal struggle for me. Just keep running out of space and thats only with two guns max that I take to the range.

I have one offical "range bag" my 10X for shotgun sports I won with matching shell pouch back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
I have not used it in a while, okay lets just say the new unfired Winchester boxes of AA target loads have changed boxes. Neat and orderly.
I cheat, I use the stuff at the private place I use...don't ask what is strewn in my truck tool box. One gets a funny look from a date when shells, condoms, kotex, hulls, cleaning kits, 'surgical tape, ABD pads, Hoppe's No. 9 ,blankets, ...etc. , is noticed on a first date. I was putting her casual clothes in their for later. Betcha never had a date in little black dress and heels climb into truck bed to dig through your tool box. Who says I don't know how to entertain a lady. :p
"I just thought medicine cabinets revealed stuff about folks" she said. I got even and inspected her car trunk - hey I was more organized. :p
My Backpack literally fell apart I was using. Replaced with new backpack, and canvas tote with "Tylenol" on the side was stolen...I lost all my stuff.
I last carried stuff to the private range in a large paper grocery bag.

I use a rolling toolbox I bought from Home Depot. Top section's a tool box (tools, cleaning kits, spare mags, targets, etc.), middle is a drawer (eyes, ears, gloves, stapler), lower section is a big compartment (shooting bags, spotting scope, spray paint, towel, targets). Only thing I don't put in it is ammo (got ammo boxes for that). At first, people on the range giggled as I rolled on by. So what? Every now and then, I spot other shooters w/ rolling toolboxes as well.

It used to be, that the hassle of loading up stuff, unloading at the range, setting up, taking down, loading back into vehicle, etc, etc, etc, took wore time than shooting. This process became a discouragement to go shoot.
My approach now is, "How much can I leave at home?" Rather than a bag full of stuff, I take 1-2 guns (all I want to clean at one time), ammo, eyes & ears. The fact that the range is attended and has a shop, and I shoot steel there helps reduce the load. I can throw these items into a gym bag and have fun.

Well, my bagmaster bag has definitely become a catchall for everything gun-related. I have more detritus at the bottom of that bag than I would have ever thought possible and am looking to move into a larger iShot bag. Hopefully, the exterior pockets on the bag will allow me to better organize my stuff.
Contents? Everything under the sun, from .40 cases that aren't mine to live .22lr rounds that got there somehow. No medkit as that stays in the truck, but there seems to be one of everything else, including a lot of scrap paper that I can't figure out the origins of.
The best part about being a shooter is having stories like this to share with the world. Maybe I'll go shooting today when I get done with the gym!

I'm somewhere in between....choas and controlled chaos. Though I have to admit that right now the bag is clean as I had to move into a new larger bag since the main zipper broke last weekend. No fancy stuff here, plain black leather soft duffel with alot of zipped pockets and large main compartment. The bag kinda follows my attitude and dress code too...unassuming, unlabeled, low key. But looks can be deceiving.....open it up and..........mack
