Next big Bay Area shoot?

June 22, 2004, 03:25 PM
I'm thinking early fall is the right time for our next Bay Area get together at Los Altos- Maybe August or September. Yeah, it's still June, but I think it's good to plan these things in advance.

These are fun shoots, previous attendees include Sven, QuarterBoreGunner, atek3, Sgt_Stevo, pipsqueak-Just to name a few.

Any thoughts? Dates that would work out for you?

My schedule is not fix. If you can let me know when is the next meet, I'll try to attend.

June 25, 2004, 05:24 PM
Aren't any of you folks near Concord Sportsman's? They do get busy on the weekends, but I think that is a good sign considering this is California.

June 25, 2004, 07:15 PM
Well, I am. But you knew that already.....
We need an East bay shoot.

September 17, 2004, 08:14 PM
Yeah.... when?

Me and the kiwi just got back from a trip to Montana... I saw so many guns on that trip and am now inspired to do another range day.

Got to shoot a blackpowder gun at the range in Libby, MT... cool.

Also got to visit with Kit and John and Oleg.
Pics are here (

Sven! where are you?

September 18, 2004, 12:20 AM
What a damn fine idea. We've got our regularly scheduled excellent weather now and it seems like an excellent idea. East Bay or whatever.

Someone put their foot down and make a decision on date and place. I'll bring the ARs.

Sven! Where are you?

edit: So labrat, did you like the smoke stick?

September 18, 2004, 12:40 AM
I'd be up for a shoot. Just got back from the local indoor range (Jackson for you SFers) and boy was it crowded. Open to any of the aforementioned ranges - Concord, Chabot, Los Altos, etc.

September 18, 2004, 12:43 AM
stv- I'm about 5 miles from Jackson right off 101; we should go shoot sometime.

we now return to your normal thread operation.

September 18, 2004, 01:09 AM
Hey y'all. Do we want to do it at Los Altos this time, or are there other ranges in the Bay Area people would like? Los Altos is a beautiful range- wonderful area up there and a fantastic drive up. But, perhaps we'd like some variation. It's all up to you guys. I'm open for most weekends (assuming my dad is in a good enough mood to drive me up there- the Bay Area Mafia combined with the HS/LC Crew means a fair amount of shooting and driving!:D). As long as I get it on the calendar before something else shows up, it'll probably work.

September 18, 2004, 01:16 AM
The Bay Area crew is way overdue for a gathering.. when was the last one, April? Best get one in before the weather turns crummy. Here's a few suggestions for dates:

Oct 9/10
Oct 16/17
Oct 23/24

Highpower matches are on the 16th, so that would be my last choice.

Location: Los Altos has worked well in the past but it's a pain for our east bay peeps. How are the facilities at Chabot?

September 18, 2004, 02:51 AM
Chris: Sure, a mini-meet at Jackson would be cool. I/we (me, brother, roommate) usually go every few weeks, so let me know.

September 18, 2004, 02:58 AM
So labrat, did you like the smoke stick?
'Twas fun. I actually got to shoot another one, not pictured, with the two trigger thing. Sorry, don't know technical terms. The owner of the guns loaded for me. I think he actually hunts with it. Pretty cool.

madkiwi got to shoot a luger and I so much fun with a Winchester 9422 (thanks to Topgun) that I had to buy one. I'll hopefully have it by the time this shoot gets organized.

We missed out on going to the range in Missoula with Kit, John and Oleg because we had to drive up to Libby but if you look at the pics (link in previous post), you'll see that they had lots of fun.

edit: you do remember madkiwi and I are about 15 min. from Jackson?

September 21, 2004, 01:50 AM
If this is going to happen-

Oct 2,3 is out- we may go to the Reno Convention Center gun show and the machine gun shoot at the Mustang Range ( in Fernley, NV

Oct 10,11 is the long weekend, might be motorcycling in the Sierras.

Not sure if Chabot is the place to go- no rapid fire, no soda can or bottle range, no sillouettes. Also no cameras!

Other than that, I am looking to get together soon.

September 21, 2004, 01:16 PM
From Calguns:

3rd Sunday of every month, CHabot in CAstro Valley opens one of their 50 yd ranges (Range 5) to plinking after 12:30PM.

Tried it for the first time last month. People brought out all kinds of targets: bowling pins, fruit, water bottles, network servers, hard drives, furniture and pots. Only rules are no glass and clean up after yourself. Ask permission before bump firing.

Handguns, rifles (no 50 BMG's) and shotguns OK.

Only costs $5.00 paid to the Range Master running Range 5. Don't need to pay the $12.00 at the range office unless you plan to shoot on the fixed distance ranges for rifle or pistol.

Note that the above isn't listed on their calendar on the website, so it might be prudent to call first. As for not allowing cameras, I've brought mine many times and not had a problem. I think you just need the permission of the person being photographed.

September 23, 2004, 12:48 AM
chabot and richmond are my first two choices. Los Altos is a drive and a half to get to from berkeley. It will be good to see y'all again.

October 16, 2004, 01:39 PM

How about Saturday, Oct. 23 at Los Altos - 10:00am ???

Or is that not enough notice?

October 16, 2004, 02:40 PM
So I look over to the wife sitting on the couch and ask "Hey honey, do we have anything planned for next weekend? The 23rd?"

Dead silence. Glare. "What?... did I forget something?" She gives me that little head tilt that tells me that I've done something really stupid but I haven't realized it yet...

Ah...wait. Yeah that would be it.

"Uhm..yeah so I guess our 12th wedding anniversary counts doesn't it?"

"nevermind... forget I asked..."

October 16, 2004, 08:21 PM
QBG - LOL! Don't want you to miss the anniversery. I'd give madkiwi the same look if that was our situation.

Well, unless we get a huge response on that date/place then we'll have to try something else.

October 18, 2004, 05:10 PM
I would love to go. However, my son have his recital on that day. I'll check on the time and will let you know if I can go.

October 18, 2004, 05:13 PM
How about Oct 30, Saturday?

October 18, 2004, 10:24 PM
October 30th is herby nominated.

Any one second the motion?

October 18, 2004, 10:35 PM
Oct. 30 looks good for me.

October 18, 2004, 10:49 PM
hey kid...I'ma computer.

October 18, 2004, 10:58 PM
Atek3, just what in the hell was that? Is that some sort of weird propaganda film controlling my brain with subliminal messages? Huh?

October 18, 2004, 11:09 PM
the meme has been spread

October 19, 2004, 01:02 AM
I think Atek3's been hitting the sauce a little hard... damn hippy.

October 19, 2004, 08:28 PM
Where would this be? Los Altos again, or what?

October 19, 2004, 09:03 PM
Do it on a weekend.

-stating the obvious

October 19, 2004, 09:48 PM
Saturday, October 30th at Los Altos sounds like a solid date.

BBQ anyone?

October 19, 2004, 09:50 PM
Yo yo, burgers and chick'n in da hizzay!

October 19, 2004, 10:01 PM
Sounds good. I may take off a bit early, I need to do some studying to do that weekend.

October 20, 2004, 12:23 AM
Cool! I'm glad there's some interest now. I thought we were going to have to bag it.

Just went to Jackson tonight and they had half the lanes down for maintenance so I still haven't shot my new Winchester 9422 lever action. Doh! We're going back tomorrow night to try again.

So, madkiwi and I will plan on being at Los Altos on the 30th. Whooohooo!

October 20, 2004, 12:49 AM
anyone going down from the east bay?

October 20, 2004, 01:00 AM
I'm in for October 30. Let's pray that the M-1 is here by then! :D

October 20, 2004, 01:12 AM
I love it when a plan comes together.

October 20, 2004, 10:06 AM
Is October 30 official? If so, someone should post an "official" thread...

October 20, 2004, 01:58 PM
I will be there on Saturday Oct 30, 1000 am at the Los Altos range. I've never been to one of these get togethers before. anything we need/should being besides guns and ammo. is there any particular place everyone meets? can you buy food out there at Los Altos?

October 20, 2004, 03:47 PM
Have fun!!!

October 20, 2004, 10:20 PM
Bill2- Guns and ammo are ALWAYS an excellent idea!:D We usually try and do a little bbq action as well. So I guess we should start the list:

I'm in for a bag of briquets if someone can bring lighter fluid.
I'm also good for a bunch of flank steak for the q' and the plastic forky/knifey/spoony stuff.

And I'm still trying to unload a bunch of PMC .223 so if anyone needs to feed a Mini14 or whatever I can set you up with all you need... within reason of course (why am I getting rid of this ammo? We'll once upon a time when I was still in the business, I was able to pick up a couple cases pretty darn cheap... but that was before I found out it wouldn't function reliably in any of my ARs worth a d**n. So there you go.)

We usually meet at the 40yrd tin-can range and spread out from there. And I promise, cross my heart, that I'll remember all the plastic bottles and jugs that I've been saving... and keep forgtting.

No food available at the range itself other than soda and junk food snacks.

Check the Los Altos Rod & Gub ( site for details.

October 21, 2004, 09:57 AM

Thanks Chris, I'll be there at the 4o yd tin can range on 10/30/04, 1000 am. who else is coming?

October 21, 2004, 12:25 PM
Unless something urgent come up, I should be able to make it. I may bring a couple friends.

October 22, 2004, 01:55 PM
anyone going down from the east bay?

October 24, 2004, 08:24 PM
I can't make the ride.

Sgt Stevo
October 26, 2004, 04:06 PM
same as above. Anybody in the campbell, or saratoga or west valley needs a ride. I willl hook them up. I need to bail early. I have a NG funtion on sat night.

October 27, 2004, 05:42 AM
ride situation is good. what time are most people arriving and leaving?

October 27, 2004, 09:05 AM
I plan on being there around 1000 am.

October 27, 2004, 10:29 PM
I'm all over this action- look for me around 10am as well.

So are we planning on the BBQ thingy? Or is this just a shootin' gig?

Oh yeah and I forgot to add that yes, I will be in my traditional Hawaiian shirt. So any one not familiar with the local THR faces can see where we're at. Trust me there will only be one reeeeally ugly blue hawaiian shirt at the range that day; and I'll be in it.

October 28, 2004, 12:17 AM
Come on people! Sound off! Let's get a final roll call:

QBG (yours truly)

October 28, 2004, 12:40 AM
I'll be there. I'm hardcore and will probably get there around opening time.

October 28, 2004, 01:43 AM
madkiwi and I will be there. I'm just asking when... I guess we'll try for around 11:00.

Looking forward to it. Haven't shot the AR for a while...

October 28, 2004, 01:44 AM
So.... am I going to be the only girl again????

October 28, 2004, 09:51 AM
count me in, at 1000 am

October 28, 2004, 04:33 PM

labrat and I were planning on bringing some potato chips and hot dogs/hot links. Someone is bringing a BBQ, right?

October 28, 2004, 11:49 PM
Confirm... I'll bring another friend. I'll be there early, but can't stay for lunch, though.

Anything that I should bring?

October 29, 2004, 12:05 AM
Where is the range? Could someone post directions?

Nevermind, I found their website. After looking at their website and the myriad of rules they have, I'm going to wait until a destination more inviting comes up. Twelve buck fee, 3 hour drive and I can't even draw from a holster? Ehh, sorry guys, I'm sitting this one out.

When are we going to have a shoot in Vallejo, Fairfield, or Sacramento?

October 29, 2004, 02:08 AM
Ok so the BBQ is on. Nice. Steak and .223 for everyone!

0 dark .30 it is. I'll be there with bells on.

October 29, 2004, 04:45 PM
Dammit- something came up- My dad has to attend a funeral down in Woodland Hills tomorrow. Can't come, guys.

October 29, 2004, 10:11 PM
Sorry CW, that's shame. We'll think of you as we bust some caps.

Can someone bring the charcoal or bricketts? I forgot to pick some up. Won't be much of a BBQ w/ no fire.

Let me know or I'll try and pick some up on the way.

madkiwi- there is a brick BBQ pit right next to the picnic table on your left as you drive in. We just need to bring the charcoal and lighter stuff.

October 30, 2004, 10:36 AM
labrat, there will be women in my posse. There are 5 of us coming down from berkeley. alas I'm the only one who posts here.

I'll see if i can scrounge some eats from the casa de atek.

we'll get there about 10:15 ish

October 30, 2004, 11:02 AM
I'll get the charcoal. There is a grocery near my house. See you around 10:00.

October 30, 2004, 11:04 AM
Good Man Pat!

Jeez I hate getting up this early on a Saturday...

October 30, 2004, 11:21 AM
qbg, could you bring any 22 rifles you can fit in your trunk? I don't have any good 'new people rifles' except for my tikka, which I have almost no ammo left for.

October 30, 2004, 01:48 PM
Just had to sleep in, leaving now. Atek3, couldn't help but note on your website:

"This is the Ruger 10/22 I sold._ I sold it to focus on my real passions, Tactical Shooting, IPSC and highpower."

Hrmmmm... ;) ;)

October 30, 2004, 08:41 PM
I've started posting stuff at:

The crew:

Here I am, demonstrating the proper way to shoot your 1911 in the hood:

Here I caught the brass mid-air as Miriam shoots the M1 Carbine:

October 30, 2004, 10:15 PM
good times were had by all. Including the two nepalese guys who'd never been shooting before.

October 30, 2004, 10:30 PM
Shooting the AR

More fun at the range

PM me if you want to know where to see the rest.

"Shooty goodness!", to use a phrase I got from kitiara.

October 31, 2004, 01:03 AM
Dam, looks like I missed out on all the fun.

Oh yea forgot newbie here.

October 31, 2004, 02:49 AM
Well heck sned45, jump on in next time! We shot the he-double-hockey-sticks out of the 40 yrd tin can range and had a nice little bbq afterwords. Welcome to The High Road.

October 31, 2004, 02:58 AM
Welcome to THR.

Keep an eye on this space for the next Bay Area shoot, Labrat and I may get together with Quarterboregunner for an evening's shooting at Jackson Arms soon.

October 31, 2004, 10:14 PM

Nice shot with the empty coming out of the M1, you can still see a puff of smoke coming out of the chamber :)

Missed out on another Bay Area Shoot. :T......

November 1, 2004, 11:51 AM
Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on thehighroad...I wanted to log in and tell everyone who came to the bay area shoot that I had a fantastic time at Los Altos this weekend! Thanks so much for letting me try all your fun toys...and thanks too to labrat for posting the pics, the one of me with the AR is certainly a keeper---also thanks to atek for bringing me along. Hope we can do it again soon---It was nice meeting everyone!

November 1, 2004, 01:01 PM
LOL, WenD...good handle. :)

see y'all next time.

November 1, 2004, 01:21 PM
Good to see everyone again, and some new faces too. Pat, what was the Picatinny rail adapater you had for the 10/22? By the way, you left without taking your subsonic .22 ammo. We did our best to shoot it all up. ;)

November 1, 2004, 06:24 PM
Yeah! That was fun... Too bad I have to leave earlier.

Oh, it is DPMS gas block with Picantinny rail. Here's my spec:
Ruger 10/22
Volquestsen Aluminum THM Barrel
Volquestsen hammer, and sear
Volquestsen Weaver cantiliver scope mount
DPMS Bull Barrel gas block (0.936" ID)
YHM folding front sight (for rail mount. Dont get the one for gas block. It is too tall)
LMT removable rear sight (but any AR detachable sight will do.)

November 1, 2004, 07:22 PM
pb, may I have a pic of that 10/22, I didn't get a chance to see it.

November 1, 2004, 10:19 PM
Yeah Pat, I wished I had gotten a pic of your 10/22; that was a funky sight set-up- AR front and rear sight on a picatinny rail system.

wenD - love the look on your face in that pic w/my AR- Ah the joys of the Evil Black Rifle... big capital 'E'; Gothic script... dripping blood even.

November 2, 2004, 11:38 AM
QuaterBG---I know! I have this innocent happy smile on my face (and a pony tail) and I'm holding this big EVIL piece of pure terribleness....(only problem is my trigger finger, oops)......anyway, I want an EVIL (with bats and black cats) toy now, too...

November 2, 2004, 01:28 PM

I'll try to take some picture tonight.

November 2, 2004, 01:50 PM

I am glad you are the one who pointed out your finger on the trigger, it's good you know the fundamental safety rules, even if you forgot one in the all the fun.

I'm glad the inadvertant double on Labrat's Kimber didn't wig you out too much!

Might I respectfully suggest next time you go shooting, don't wear a deep neck T-shirt. I guess it didn't happen this time, but hot brass has a "Murphy's Law" aspect to it. According to other women shooters, nothing burns quite like brass falling "down there".

Until next time,

November 2, 2004, 02:01 PM
Last time I got burned was when a piece of hot 22 brass got flipped into my safety goggles against my cheek. I had a nice 22 lr shaped burn there for a few weeks.

November 2, 2004, 04:21 PM
madkiwi,---yes thanks for the suggestion...i avoided wearing a hooded sweatshirt (did this in the past and shells turned up in the washing machine), but will definitely wear a different shirt next time...don't want a hot brass down the shirt:)

I really liked both the kimbers, but i was certainly surprised by the light trigger pull on labrat's...I wasn't anticipating that I would accidentally shoot in rapid sucession...but i liked both guns a great deal (perhaps a heavier trigger is better for me)...

November 2, 2004, 04:34 PM
1911's are now my favorite handguns. My Kimber is rock solid, and I love everything about it.

I have a Sig Sauer P229 in .357 Sig that gets little range time. There's just something about shooting a .45 that warms the heart.

I know you said you were going to get a Glock, please reconsider! If God had wanted handguns to be made of plastic, he would have told John Moses Browning to make them that way!

November 2, 2004, 04:44 PM
oh please. Glocks are rock solid combat tupperware. :)
No matter what you feed them, they work.
Same can't be said for many 1911's, without lots of polishing and tuning.

November 2, 2004, 04:53 PM
hey, it was good seeing all of you there, now I can put a face to your names. Thanks to 1/4 bore gunner for letting me fire his tricked out AR with the sight. and I got to fire someone's .308 M14 - really nice. I also let some people fire my Benelli M1 12 ga, with slugs. and a few people declined, said they had been there and done that and didn't want the bruises.
Atek - I hope all the people you brought had a good time, it was fun letting them shoots different guns.

sorry I couldn't stay for the bar-b-que.

we'll have to do this again.

November 2, 2004, 07:01 PM
I also let some people fire my Benelli M1 12 ga, with slugs. and a few people declined, said they had been there and done that and didn't want the bruises.

LOL!!! I think that was me, hehe.

WenD - I'm glad you had fun! It was great to have some other women there this time.

atek - I really enjoyed the FAL. Now I have to get one. I guess I have to move to Montana first though because I want to get a proper one.

November 3, 2004, 11:37 AM
madkiwi, oh man...don't confuse the glock-puchasing situation!:) it took me so long to narrow it down and it has been agony...if i can't make up my mind I will never end up buying one....and that's bad....I think I'll hold off on the Kimbers...don't get me wrong, they are beautiful guns, but I'm probably going to buy one after i buy a glock.

November 3, 2004, 01:49 PM

Don't listen to Atek. Go to "The Dark Side".

Isn't she pretty?

Glock's are a lot of things, but good-looking? Glocks are popular with police departments because they are the low bidder! But serious cops that have to fire their weapons in action (SWAT) are using Kimbers and Springfield TRP pistols.

Our friend Kitiara likes her Glock, but she only bought it after she broke the mag release in her Kimber, after putting over 5000 rounds through it!

Sure, Glocktalk gets a lot of traffic. But is a happier place. Nirvana in a handgun.

hehehehe. I'm evil.

November 3, 2004, 03:59 PM
YES! beautiful indeed, a piece of artwork, but this debate will only retard the purchasing process and end up leaving me without either! i was previously so happy to have arrived at a decision! ...EVIL...

November 3, 2004, 04:04 PM
just an observation I've made. Many people go from glocks to 1911's (inc. the kimber), few go from 1911's to glocks. Maybe you should get the kimber first. Put a few thousand rounds through it, and if you still feel the need to go plastic do so.

November 3, 2004, 04:08 PM
there's also the coast factor, if Kimber's were the same price, i'd probably do it (at least the first time around)

November 3, 2004, 04:10 PM
oops, "COST" factor

November 4, 2004, 12:01 AM
Franken 10/22

November 4, 2004, 04:09 AM
thats awsome. Is that fajen stock?

November 4, 2004, 12:00 PM
Yes, it is Fajan stock.

The rear sight is a bit more forward than I would think. However, it works ok. The front sight is a bit too thick. I think I'll change it to a thinner one.

Sgt Stevo
November 4, 2004, 05:57 PM
Wend, buy a glock. I have owned over 50 weapons of all types. And I now carry a glock on my permit. 1911 TYPE GUNS ARE MY FAV AS WELL. hOWEVER. I have a fast v-8 at home. But I drive a new Volvo most the time. My point is this. the volvo does not need tuning, etc. It is done. So I play with 1911 type guns. But I use a Glock everyday. Stevo......

November 5, 2004, 11:20 AM
Sgt, I think that's probably great advice...I'd like a solid everyday piece that takes minimal care right now....and THEN I'll buy something more fun down the road

November 5, 2004, 03:06 PM
stevo is right.

November 5, 2004, 07:22 PM
In the Day late, Dollar short department. I will probably be at Los Altos Gun and Rod this saturday for a couple hours in the early afternoon. Unless work demands that I be in the office

November 6, 2004, 05:53 PM
Stevo: If you COULD carry the 1911, would you... THAT is the question.

Gary H
November 10, 2004, 12:57 AM
Is there a next shoot setup? I have two/possibly three 20-21 year old female employees that want to go shooting for the first time. I'll have three if I can get my other employee to cover. All bright straight "A" University students, fun and beautiful. So, it is in someones best interest to let me know. I'm just coming out of hiding and thought that this get together would be a good way to introduce them to shooting. The interest is actually coming from their side. They know that myself and one of my other doctors (female) were avid shooters. In fact, my other doctor just retired and is moving out of California to North Dakota to open a gunshop. Anyway, they want to give it a try.

Let me know. ;)

November 10, 2004, 03:24 AM
you live up in marin?

why don't we have a shoot at richmond. Its closer to you and to a lot of the east bay crew (including myself). Or chabot...

Gary H
November 10, 2004, 11:15 AM
Chabot is more of a drive, but Chabot is a nicer facility. We can pack a lunch and eat at the tables near the main building. All of these women live in the Berkeley - Fremont corridor, so that works for me. The down side is that Chabot is a carefully controlled range where you must bring politically correct targets (no silhouettes) and I don't think that we will be able to arrange shooting from the holster.

November 12, 2004, 02:35 PM

I have never been to Chabot, but I'm up for it. I have a couple of .22lr pistol, and rifle, this should be good for beginners.

Tell me the date and I'll try to make it. I think we should open a new thread.

Gary H
November 13, 2004, 12:33 AM
I'll get a firm date from the women and post in a new thread.
