So if the AWB sunsets......

Do you think that will be the end of it or will the antis be bringing it up every chance they get trying to get it passed again. I would hope that if it can't get passed before the sunset the debate would be pretty much over and most of the pols would be smart enough to let it RIP. The realistic side of me seems to think this won't happen and that they'll keep trying until they have a chance to sneak it through somehow.
What say you?

If it doesn't get extended, a couple of possible scenarios could happen.
1. Antis could fly under radar and try to get it tacked onto some other bill and then back room deal to keep it. Need both sides of congress to pull this off, so the house would need more antis elected.
2. The antis keep bringing this up to affect PR and to wear down the opposition. Depends upon how willing the antis are to twist statistics and facts as to whether they can really pull that off.
3. We have a sudden shift left of not only the Presidency, (aka. John Kerry), but Congress as well. Doesn't look probable for this next election, but you never really know.
4. This one would be the best hope for the antis, such as Feinstein, Schumer, Lautenberg, etc. Another mass killing using a firearm that they can easily convince the public of as being an assault weapon that they wanted banned, but the evil republicans and possibly Prez. Bush, who are in the back pockets of the criminal backing NRA, stopped the bill. This could cause a lot more Eggos (waffles) on the GOP side to succumb to the pressure and go for a new ban, possibly even a permanent one. We know how the antis will use a tragic situation to further their agenda, as they did with the Stockton, CA shootings and the Columbine Killings.

Depends on the elections... right now we have the votes to stop it in the House and we are within three-four votes of being able to win a Senate vote. We could easily pick up that many pro-gun seats in the Senate this election, if we pick up five I think we will have enough of a margin that it will cease to be an issue until 2006.
Dianne will still propose the bill of course and it will still linger in committee; but she will stop trying to force it to the floor for a vote if she knows she will lose the vote. Why spend the political capital to go nowhere?
Of course, if we can't put enough pro-gun votes in Senate seats, then I expect Dianne will propose even worse bills since she will now be working with a clean slate.

Feinswine has proposed a simple 10 year renewal because that is all that can pass. In fact, I remember during the debate in March over the Lawful Commerce in Firearms Act that the 'swine even offered to make a deal which would have allowed new normal capacity mags to be sold. I don't want to sound overconfident, but these are not the actions of someone who has a lot of confidence in winning on an issue near and dear to her black heart.
I spoke to a friend of mine in NH last night who's very involved in the pro-RKBA fight and who is also an FFL. I asked him about the sunset, and he thinks that it is a done deal - because prices on pre-ban mags have begun to fall.
The simple fact is that the '94 ban cost a bunch of Dems, including the sitting Speaker of the House, their jobs. I can't imagine that Thundering Herd of Jackasses is that stupid as to say "please, sir, may I have another!," nor do I think that Bush has a comfortable enough margin to pi$$ off at least several hundred thousand gun owners across the country prior to November.
All that said, after the lost battles of the '90's I take NOTHING for granted. I'll be placing calls and sending lots of letters to my rep and sinators. Fortunately, since I live in Texas, they may actually give a damn - unlike when I lived in the PRNJ.

All I know is I'm gonna get a room in Spenard, a bottle of something nice and a few select DVD's and have myself a little party. To be followed by a trip to the range early Sunday morning. Sadly, I can't afford to buy any un-banned goodies right now.

Gun Control legislation (some FAR worse than the AWB) will be an eternal concern untill we can actually saw without ANY doubt that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to pass. We can't say that today, and im not sure we will be able to say it in the near future either.
