What's up with prices on the gun auction sites?

I've been to auctionarms.com and gunbroker.com looking for good deals on 9mm FMJ, etc, and am amazed at the prices people are asking. 300 rounds of 115gr FMJ for $50!:what: And that does not include shipping and handling!

Wal-Mart has the Winchester white box 115gr for $10.97. Even with sales tax, it appears that I am better off going to Wally World.

Anyways, I thought that I'd at least see competitive prices at these sites. Instead, it looks like these places are havens for rip-off artists. What gives?

I sell a lot of items through there, and they are a good place to shop. Unfortunately you do find some outrageous prices at times. A couple of reasons are that

(1) the listings are free so a lot of people tend to just list things high looking for suckers.

(2) Some folks thought they got a killer deal on something and want to make a buck or two, but they really didn't get a deal in the first place.

I tend to know my local prices going in which really helps when sorting the good from the bad. Eyes wide open my friends, always.

Some sites (dunno which) only charge the seller when the item is sold via the auction. To avoid the fee, some people list outrageously high prices, and prospective buyers contact the seller via email with a sane offer. They negotiate the sale privately, without using the auction service, thereby avoiding the fees.

Gun prices on the auction sites, I'm talking the initial seller-set starting price, are jumping quite a bit, too.

Ojib,

You won't beat that price on Wally World ammo. Don't even bother looking. The obly hting that has EVER worked out cheaper for me is Blazer at Academy Sports but I don't think y;all have them in AL.

I've noticed the same thing latly. It seems that berfore X-mass there were sometimes deals on these sites but I have not found one in quite a while. Maybe I was just more free with my money before X-mass.

I just bought some ammo at Natchez. I bought a case and 1/2 of CCI Blazer and Sellier & Bellot 9mm. It came out about the same as Wal-Mart stuff but I really don't think it is as good.

I've found better prices with people selling on here than on gunbroker or gunsamerica lately.
