Do the converted mags still work in a non castrated AK?
I know you have to file the mag catch and build up the front, but i dont know if this would mean they wouldnt function in a SAR:barf: or the like.
:)

If you add a piece of pipe to act as a feedramp and file on the mag catch a bit, normal hi-caps will work without alteration, so they would still work in other AKs. You would also need to add 4 (possibly 5) US parts to be legal to use hi-caps in a Saiga.

What i need to know is if AFTER you file the mag catch and enclose the front of the mag so that it looks like a "normal" Saiga mag, will it work fine in that state in a SAR or Vepr or the like?

Most people convert the rifle to take hicap mags, instead of the more difficult task of converting hicap mags to fit in the (unmodified) Saiga. Converting a mag to work in the Saiga would probably prevent it from working properly in a normal AK, which is why most people add the feedramp and file the mag catch on the rifle instead of on each magazine.

Welding a piece of pipe into the gun to act as a feed ramp sounds like it isnt a piece of cake:confused:

You can use a counter-sunk screw, or just JBweld/Devcon it in there. The epoxy method might not last forever, but it should last a while.

You dont even need a dremel. :D Its really simple to cut and put in there, just make sure you have enough US parts.

Kharn, where are you getting your information on the US part count? The gun does not have a pistol grip, threaded muzzle, etc. You can have the high capacity magazine and it will not qualify as an assault rifle. No US parts necessary.

I heard on AK-47.net that you needed US parts, due to importation laws; a hicap Saiga would not be legal for importation unless US parts were added, thus you cant make one take hicaps without adding US parts.

I could be wrong. I might be confusing the Bush ban, some obscure BATF regulation, or the Clinton Ban. Can you say "UNCONSTITUTIONALLY VAGUE?" I knew you could.

Here's one of the threads I found on the issue: http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99043&highlight=Saiga+and+parts Circuits is a Class 3 and knows his stuff. The laws might be vague, but the ATF is the group interpreting them and they decided that hicap rifles are unsporting and thus not fit for importation.
