Crossbow Rifle?

In the mid 60s I went to an antique gun show in Kansas City and saw a crossbow of which I have never seen since. It was a typical looking crossbow but with a rifled barrel on top. It was slotted to allow the bow string to proceed about 2/3s of the way down the barrel. I thought the owner told me it shot a lead ball or bullet, but recently I was told that crossbows of this type fired short "bolts." Anybody familiar with this unusual type of weapon??

Sounds like a pellet crossbow to me, NOT a bolt (tipped fletched rod much like an arrow, but with an upsidedown T for the positions of the feathers) firing crossbow.
