Despite the BS headline, this is good news. North Carolina and Washington have signed agreements to honor each others CCWs. There are more states to be announced on Thursday.

Maybe the headline is a veiled plea for open carry. :D

As an NC resident, that's great to hear :)

Thanks for that post - I'm in Idaho and hopeful they'll recognize our permits.

I sure hope so Rick , since your state is so kind as to recognize ours .

Just saw a blurb about the recognition of NC CCW permits on Seattle's KING-TV (NBC afilliate) and all they said was that now Washington State will be getting many more people coming into the state with legally carried concealed weapons. Not one word about how the reciprocity law works or what the requirements are for WA to recognize those permits.

KING TV is one of the most liberal, anti-gun media organizations in the state. The reporting is usually biased toward their ideas and of the three network stations in Seattle, they are the worst for reporting accurate information in their stories. Even their weatherman sucks.

Any word on Oregon? I know our requirements are the same, if not stricter...maybe Oregon is gumming up those works though...kinda silly, I think not to have it between neighboring States. The cynic in me thinks it is the revenue as they issue out of state permits and probably get a fair share of $$ from Oregonians.

Oregon will not be recognized by Washington because Oregon doesn't recognize Washington, period.

Does the new WA las specifically require that a reciprocal agreement be required between the two states? Has NC specifically honored the WA CCW permit? I thought that as long as another state uses the same criteria for CCW licensing as WA does, then the permits from that state will be recognized in WA as being valid.

So if the Oregon CCW licensing requirements are at least the same as what WA uses, then Oregon CCW permits should be honored in WA at some point. The group of people doing the criteria search in WA are probably looking an only one state at a time to make sure the new WA law is applied properly to another state.

Even though the WA CCW license is honored by 11 other states, there is no word yet that WA will honor those permits (yet).

Herald article (http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/04/06/28/loc_concealed001.cfm)
Washington has issued concealed weapon licenses for more than 40 years. Applicants must be at least 21, pass a criminal background check, have a clean criminal history and pay a fee. Today, according to Waldron, about 240,000 people - about 5 percent of the state's adult population - are licensed to carry concealed weapons.

This law specifies that other states must have the same guidelines as Washington in order for their residents to carry guns when visiting. And for those that don't - Kentucky will not because of the age issue - their residents must leave their firearms at home. The other states must also honor Washington's concealed weapon licenses.

Waldron lobbied for reciprocity for several years without success. But since Sept. 11, 2001, gun sales and license requests have spiked nationally, and there's been an "attitudinal change" among lawmakers "who this fall can show voters they voted for a gun bill."

The WA statute does require reciprocity and OR will not do that as WA does not have a training requirement which OR does have.

The states that Washington has CCW reciprocity with are Mississippi, Ohio and North Carolina.

The office sent out surveys to all 49 states to obtain the necessary information on each states' concealed weapons permits. Approximately 24 states have responded in some way, however, we are still waiting for responses from the other 25 states. Of the 24 responses we have received, there are 3 states that qualify for reciprocity; 17 states that do not qualify; and 4 states that need more time to respond. Of the states that do not qualify for reciprocity, the most common reason is because the state does not have a reciprocity statute.

To determine where your state landed in their survey you have to call (360) 664-6616. They didn't post that information, which would have been useful for those of us wanting to inititate something within our own states.
Idaho won't be honored because we issue permits to 18 year old adults and we don't require a mental health background check before issueing the permit. That's too bad - I'm in WA at least one a week shopping, which I think I'll stop doing. No reason to spend my $'s there...

And Rick, since Washington has a high sales tax your dollars do go directly to our treasury. If you ever have the time, a nice letter stating that fact to our AG would be helpful. Next to votes, money is the second most thing they understand. Or maybe it's the first.

And let me be the second to thank Idaho for recognizing our permits, and not being a bunch of numnuts like our politicians. I think I see a summer road trip in our future. Loading up the kids in our RV and heading out to spend a few days at the Silverwood amusement park north of Coeur D'Alene. :D

I told the person I spoke with in the AG office that I would stop shopping there. I've bought my last 3 cars there in Spokane - never again.

We're planning a trip to Silverwood too, my daughter got a free ticket for participating in a school reading program and she's bugging me to let her use it. It's a fun place.

Tell me how to get out of paying it. I don't know if I've paid it on the cars, I'd have to ask my wife. I doubt it, since they were delivered just over the state line - so all I did is help a dealer clear inventory. I know when we grocery shop at Costco we pay tax and if I grab a burger at a local eatery I pay tax.

I'm a bit confused... When I get an Oregon CHL, will this mean I can carry in Washington? Or will I not be able to because Oregon will not honor WA permits? This is pretty irritating since I will probably live in the Portland area and frequently travel across the river.

Tell them you are from out of state and show them your picture ID from your state of residence. My aunt from Nevada does it all the time.

PromptCritical,

No, your OR CHL will not be good in WA. Simple solution, get a WA non-resident permit. It's very simple to do, see www.packing.org
