A couple projects ran fleeting through my head earlier today...
First was how to convert a CZ52 roller lock mechanism into a carbine. 7.62x25 out of a 16" barrel would be "a good thing" :) Of course, I'd "stretch" the mechanism a little in the vertical direction to get rid of the groove in the bottom of the chamber.
Another was a delayed blowback style mechanism for a carbine where instead of being gas operated, it's gas-triggered blowback, basically the breech locked into place by a latch that's disengaged by gas pressue once the bullet passes it (halfway, 3/4 way, down the barrel or so). It'd be dead simple... "felt" like a good mechanism for a handgun cartridge.
I think I've just got carbine on the mind, since I don't have one. We all know how to fix that problem :)
I just orderd Dixie Gunworks' catalog online too... figure to start in to blackpowder/percussion arms. I'd love to be a hobby gunsmith, and I figure the low pressure, older arms may be a good place to start, maybe with a single shot pistol done from scratch. It would be something to bide my time with while I save up for a proper lathe and mill :)
Anyone else have the urge to gunsmith, not for building kits, but for doing something entirely new?
