While solving the problems of the world at lunch the other day with a friend, he casually mentioned how cool it would be to compete in a pin match using a Chinese .45 ACP broomhandle. That got me thinking about other wild firearms for this. One that came to mind was the Gwinn Bushmaster pistol in .223 caliber.

Any other ideas out there?

8" BFR in 45-70 with grrrreat big wadcutters :)

EDIT: Or, something large, revolving, and using percussion caps and black powder.... and the softest lead ball you can cast.

CCI pistol shotshells.

You won't need a lot of pins.

454 Casull.

Only five shots, so missing isn't an option.

I'm the guy who tried to bring a C96 Broomhandle and a LeMat to Cowboy Action matches, so I'm probably not a good guy to ask :)

use a 12/20 gage with slugs at 10 yards, pins won't last long but it sure does move em back a ways, might do to have a backstop to keep them within walking distance so you won't need a golf cart to reset whats left for the next shooter.

We've done similar things at some informal pin shoots. Make the shooters exchange handguns just before ths start of the match. Shoot 2 handguns at once each of differant calibers/ styles like an 45acp auto and single action 357 or 44. Make the competitors recite their favorite Movie line, gun related of course. Make them shoot weak handed and from right to left. Put the pins on the back edge of the table and then shoot them with 22's. :D

I learned a lot about shooting tipping over bowling pins with a .22 LR. Shooting with both eyes open. Fast and accurate presentation. Clearing jams, etc. . .

With a PACT timer my best time for 5 pins, two tears (2 high, 3 low) was 1.68 seconds IIRC with my Buckmark 5.5 Target w/ Tasco PDP4 20 w/a MOA dot. I've gotten close a few times since but never beat that time. Felt really slow. I swore it was going to be a 4-5 second run.

I've seen 223s used on pins. They don't move. Too much penetration, they just go right through.

My .50 AE DEagle does a number on pins as does Kamicosmos' .357 DEagle. The .357 is almost like cheating in a pin match as it comes back on target like a 22.

Shotguns are a good option. Blackpowder would be fun. Exotic actions like single shots, hand crank Gatlings, et al could be a hoot. I think that a 9410 would make a neat option. How many other ideal uses for a lever-shotgun are there if not for knocking down bowling pins ;)

I just thought. Don't limit yourself to wacky ideas for the guns. How about wacky ideas for the pins? Like hang the pins from twine and you have to shoot the twine and not hit the pin. Swing a pin back and forth on a string and you have to hit it 5 times before it swings less than a foot, etc . . .

My Favorite was in UC when Bowman clears the pins using a Colt Monitor, (the police thompson SMG).

One thing that I've done is to use a .22, but only head shots are allowed, and from distances of 10 to 25 yards.

Another that's kind of fun is to place the bowling pins together, sort of bunched up. Then you have to take out the pins at the back of the group using head shots.

Uh, the Colt Monitor is not a thompson, its a Commercial version of the 1918 AUtomatic Rifle, aka the BAR.

.45 cal Pepperbox?

Ducks' Foot? 3 pins set 3 feet apart....

Bowling ball mortar? Min. distance 200 yards.

Any semi auto rifle... 10 rds at 100 yards. (You garand guys can show off by only using 8)

1911, 1917 Colt or SW.... from Horseback

A BAR will split a bowling pin in half at close range... I did it once. Sure it was hit before with smaller ordinance... but that was cool.

"...a C96 Broomhandle and a LeMat..." I'm curious, Wakal. Did they not let you shoot? Seems to me that the rules say anything prior to 1898. That'd let Maxim MG's in.

I have a 10" air cannon. Can shoot bowling balls about 3-500 FPS, also pumpkins.

If I shoot the table out from under the pins, that counts too, right?

Try:

Snubby .38's with 158's. Center hits, please. (Detective Specials get an extra shot. ;))

Single-shot's, of whatever type. 5 pins, 5 reloads. (Shotguns might get lucky, but at the close ranges typical of pin shoots, I doubt it.)

Shoot out of a car window, or mock-up. Weak hand on the wheel, pins 90 degrees left from the vehicle's long axis. Alternatively, 45 degrees over-shoulder to the rear, as if shooting at pursuit.

O/U or SXS shotgun, with 7 1/2 birdshot. Only one reload allowed.

M-1 carbine, w/ 10 rounds.

Different-colored no-shoot "hostage" pins, offering various degrees of cover for the "perp" pins. Alternatively, pick the "terrorist suicide bombers" out of a crowd, before they explode! (I.e., Time runs out.) Penalties for shooting civilians. Knocking 'em flying with well-hit "perps" is OK, though.

Pistol-caliber carbines, at 100 yards, open sights, off-hand.

Pins on a slow-moving platform, "crossing a bridge" at 100 yards. Pick off the pins, or shoot out a couple of "bridge supports" that're considerably smaller than the pins, to drop the "bridge" at an appropriate time. Scope rifles at 100 yds, or closer with other stuff.

Crossbows. Blunts at medium range.

Pins made of ice. Must remove 50% or greater by weight to clear table.

These could be lots of fun...:)

I shot my Makarov in a mixed pins/plate/paper target shoot a couple years back. My wife regularly shoots her Ruger Mk II at the same shoot.

I'm planning on shooting my P-38 at a local IDPA match as soon as I get a couple more mags for it. I'd try my Enfield Mk 2* revolver, if I could find any ammo.
