Hello all.

I need to learn again. I'm interested in learning how to acquit myself well with sticks, particularly two short (2.5 - 3') sticks.

Can someone point me towards 'escrima for dummies' as a first step?

Thanks.

-Ben

There are many tapes or you can try to find books or a Filipino martial arts school

PS, I highly recommend finding a school for personalized instruction, most of the Kali/escrima schools I have seen have been very good and professional.

Also, Filipino stick fighting is really good to learn how to use your ASP type baton to the max. You may try to find a police ASP training type school also. Just do a search on yahoo, shouldnt be too hard to find one.

2.5'-3' as about 4-10" longer than most stickfighters prefer. There will probably be an FMA school nearby if you are in MA.

It depends on the tradition. Some Japanese arts use a single 3' stick (hanbo). It's use, derived from the Kukishin Ryu weapons arts, looks considerably different than the FMA arts (which, as Wanderer pointed out, use a shorter stick). See Stick Fighting Techniques of Self-defense (Hatsumi, Chambers).

There are also Chinese cane fighting techniques.

Benjamin:

Where are you in Massachusetts? I delve into the sticks some and if you are close enough we could get together and do some physical training on them.

I use two 26 inches long quite often [ double stick ] but we can play with one on one with just a single stick as well.

Shoot me a pm if you like.

I also recommend the book by Hatsumi
