A neat idea...

You could make your own spear by somehow attaching a bayonet at the end of a long stick. Would it work?

Sure, just be sure you secure it tightly so it won't come loose under impact.

if money is an issue. But with the number of quality spears available commercially, why do so, unless strapped financially or in dire need?

BTW, welcome to The High Road!

Kenshin, as fj said, welcome to The High Road.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I was at first thinking of trimming the staff down to fit through the barrel loop many bayonets have...but, a more elegant solution would be to actually mount a bayonet lug onto the staff. Then, one would have a relatively safe and unobtrusive staff that could be quickly modified to stave off the hyenas! :D

Come to think of it, that's not bad!
How much would a bayonet lug cost you?

Out of curiosity, Kenshin, where in the Bay area are you?
It's funny, so many people put Bay area, or sf bay area as their location, but it actually covers a huge area.
North bay, South bay, East bay....
And the East bay really has nothing in common with the other two, except the same ridiculous laws....

Not a new Idea WWII training manuals included such ideas in the survival sections
The Randall survival Knife was designed with a hollow tube handle for such a need.

There is a blurb and some pictures in "Swords and Hilt Weapons" published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1989 about "Last ditch" weapons that were made up by the Brits for the expected German Invasion.

They were pikes made by welding old No.1 MkIII Enfield Bayonets to the ends of pieces of water or gas pipe.

If they would have had to use these things, it would have been UGLY. Never give up...

I have an old Swedish Mauser Bayo that has a hollow handle. I stuck a piece of bamboo about 6 feet long in it back when I was a kid, just to say I did. It would work in a pinch I guess. I would rather have a real spear.

The purpose of a bayonet is to turn a rifle into a half fast spear. This sounds like a way to make a bayonet into a pretty decent spear. Lots and lots of old bayonets out there available really cheap, too. Go for it. This is a good idea.

Hm. If one REALLY wanted to think outside the box (which I've been encouraged to do, lately), one could mount a bayonet on either side of one end
of a staff, giving a rather large and very artistic- but effective- spearhead.

The Cold Steel Bushman is designed for that too... pretty stout knife.

...and I gave one to Bud Malstrom, with a 4 foot dowel. He said he was going to drill a hole for a butterfly screw, so he could have an easy-on/off spear and innocent looking walking stick when he went to Africa on safari (as an observer).
