got about 200 rounds thru a brand new 870 P.
the winchester aluminum base rounds 3 dram 1 oz loads will shoot and then when you attempt to shuck out the shell, it stays put. shake the slide back and forth a few times, and then it ejects no problem. This happens with most of them. Got a good buddy that has a new 870 express that is doing the SAME THING with the same loads in his gun as mine is.

the AA winchester light trap loads function without a hitch.
the Estate brand that is the 3 1/4 dram 1 oz load with a brass base functions about 1 fail to eject to about 30-40 rounds. the fail to eject scenario is the same as above.
the Fed tactical loads, the buckshot and slug highbrass function fine so far.
got any ideas? Mechanical? ammo related?

I betcha the chamber is dirty with plastic fouling.

Take wisps of 0000 steel wool and put this around a bristle brush. Twist and turn real good. Better yet - chuck the rod in a cordless drill and do this. Make sure a choke is in ( to protect threads) and do the whole bbl to remove the plastic fouling throughout.

Plastic fouling builds up without much notice. If any ammo is a bit out of spec, or if hulls are not properly re-sized, it shows up real quick. Sometimes may require a few rds to get warmed up to become sticky enough to cause problems.

Clean the extractor real well , and the notch in bbl for extractor while at it.

FWIW - most problems with shotguns is this very thing , no matter the platform.

IMO, sm nailed it. Newer Rem chambers oft are a bit less polished than they should be.

Folks,

Just bought a NIB 870P and had been shooting different target loads which of course the Wall Mart cheapies (Federal and winchesters , $15/case). I never had any problems with these other than trying to get used to re-coil. Of course I searched the internet for any issues of 870 jams. I followed the advice about cleanning the chamber using the method proposed by MSDuckmen from another website. His method was to use a brake cylinder honning device which is exactly as the same device from Browsnelll, followed of course with steel wool.

I just went to the range today and surprisingly experienced the situation as john's using Federal shells from Wally. and I thought I pre-empted that scenerio by cleaning the barrel.

I am going to do the same steps again hopefully I won't have to experience it anymore.

Thanks to all . I was thinking of getting a sem- auto, but ended up with the 870P and will keep it stock after reading all the comments of from this board.
