Asian-American. Check the box?

OK. I have a job application for my dream job in my dream location.

There's a survey at the last page that says it's just trying to comply with EEO standards and is optional, doesn't mention anything about it being used for quotas, and proceeds to ask if I'm handicapped, my ethnicity, etc. etc. etc.

I'm qualified for the position and there are two openings so I have a fair shot at the position.

I was surprised three out of three surveyed THR buddies think I should. One of my coworkers (who also applied and referred me to the position) thinks I should take advantage of everything I can because it's there, and work the system to its fullest.

I'm pretty against it but will keep an open mind. Your thoughts?

You are an AMERICAN. Only difference between you and me is your ancestors were Asian while mine were European/Indian (aka Injun).

Kinda like the 4473's, lately I'm just picking any old box, usually a different one on the state form. If they think it is illegal, let them take me to court and try to prove what I am. Ought to be a right pretty circus.

Hmmm....

You could. I don't know if I would. I would forever wonder whether or not I was and am employed over another because of what I filled out. It would bother me. What if they already have filled the (unofficial) quota of whatever you claim to be?

Well if they need to hire a minority for a quota, it may as well be you.

As a hiring manager type, just understand that the hiring manager can't see the application form. He won't know anything until he sees you. The applic forms typically just get filed someplace, and the data goes in as part of a big summary report to the EOC.

It could help you if you are NOT hired because of your racial makeup.

I have no idea what a white person born in Africa would put on the form though....

Hey, getting the job is the big deal. Once you're in, you can put your charm & boyish good looks to use! :neener:

Do whatever you can to get the job you want!

It sounds like this is the one..

Just do it..:)

My Dutch coworker put down Asian-American as a joke because he's first generation American. Born in Indonesia :D

I would check ALL the boxes... It confuses them, but it's too PC for them to ask.. :)

I marked "Other" on my college ap and wrote "Formosa" on it. When they asked me, I said "Formosa is a small island off the coast of China". The lady was delighted and said they never had anybody from Formosa..

That year, I got a big fat scholarship; and on the ethnic breakdown, it said "Formosa, 1" :D

If there's no "other" I mark them all. Otherwise, I mark other.

I wouldn't.

Even if the hiring manager doesn't see it before hand, why give validity to the EOC survey that the politicians are going to spin to use more of my tax dollars for Affirmative Action programs?

Besides, ink is expensive, and my time is precious. The time I save by not marking the checkbox, and can use for reading THR. :D

Skunk, shouldn't you put down "Tactical-American"?

Go ahead and check it. Asian-Americans don't get any extra goodies anyway, since they are an oppressed minority that doesn't lobby congress enough. So there is nothing to be guilty about. :neener:

Well, if they get a tax break or something because of you checking a box then more power to you. Better than some other 'minority' getting the position to fill some quota. Might as well be a 'minority' that usually doesn't get any notice.

I'm 1/2 German - dad was from Germany. Born there, not immigrated 120 years ago. I have dual citizenship because of that fact. I've never seen a 'German-American' box on an application and I wouldn't have checked it if I had seen it. I was born here and, proud as I am of my heritage, that makes me an American.

what would I call myself since my family has been here for over 450 years , brought here by the English , PreAmericans?? No boxes for me to check , Skunk do what you think is fit and let your conscience be your guide , I would rather be hired for my Ability , than by someone saying we have to fill a quota .. it's a matter of pride for me .. I got to the places in my riddled past by my experiance and capability and it wasn't easy .. and I can say it with pride too .

It is wrong for them to ask you--
That being said-- If the system is flawed --use that flaw to your benefit and to confound the chief sheeples--

I check whatever I am in the mood for---

I have no idea what a white person born in Africa would put on the form though....LGB, that fits me to a T! I often describe myself as "African-American", which causes hoots of laughter from my white friends and comments like "No way - you'se a honky!" from my black friends!

I'm Caucasian and live in an area of Texas where folks like me make up 8.5% of the population. Hispanics are just about exactly 90% of the population.

I continually receive "too bad" job application notices that tell me that they have to give priority to minorities. Yeah???? What am I?

The next application I submit, I'm going to select another racial category and let them worry about proving that I'm not Hispanic or African-American. State sponsored racism is just as despicable as any other kind.

I'd just fill the form out as accurately as I could, and not worry about it. When you are looking at a job, it's not the time to screw with the system, or try to tell them how dumb and PC they are. They probably already know this and agree.

Well.

Applied for the position, did NOT check the box.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Hence he is a native of the United States, as opposed to a foreign-born like me. :)

So, now did you just falsify your application?

BamBam-31
February 16, 2003, 02:26 PM
I believe the box was part of an optional survey, so Skunk didn't falsify anything.

When personal info is asked on an optional basis, I usually don't answer. I think you did the right thing, Skunk. Make them hire you on your merits alone.

Good luck. :)
