Rookie Optics Question

I may have to go with a Remington 700VS (.308) to compliment my Marlin 1894C and I have no training at all with optics. Any recommendations? Use will be range only, hopefully. I'll probably hang with 200 yards, but might sometimes go out to 500 or more. Simplicity is the most important factor and I'm very experienced with open sights. Value is always a concern, but I'd rather do it right the first time.
Thanks.

Variable: Leupold M1 3.5-10x40 or Leupold M3 3.5-10x40 (both available in duplex or mildot) - about $500-$650

Fixed: SWFA Super Sniper 10x42 Mildot - $299

From my experience, Weaver Grand Slams are the best bang for the buck. Bright, clear optics that are comparable to my Leopold Vari-X III, but for hundreds less.

I second the recommendation for the Leupold 3.5-10x40 M1. This counts as "getting it right the first time" and you'll save money later. Zero it at 100 yards, and then determine the "click" come-ups at any distance out to about 800 yards. Range target, lookup clicks on note-card, dial elevation, and shoot!
