View Full Version : Ever Want A POS Gun?

Sometimes I have this urge to go out and get some cheap, nickel plated POS gun. I just want a nickel plated, pearl gripped cheap little pop gun. I don't know why. Anyone else ever feel this way?
Maybe it's like wanting to hire a sleazy hooker, I dunno.
Maybe it's like drinking cheap beer, I dunno.

Yes! I confess. I'm a sucker for $50 and $75 handguns, typically ancient H&R lemon squeezers. But sometimes I get surprised. I picked up a "New Orleans Pimp Special"--an old Colt PPS with stained mother-of-pearl grips for $150 or so. Turned out to be a tack driver on par with my Sig P-225. Who knew?

I knew a fellow who bought a dozen or so of those nickel plated revolvers and put them under glass in his sunken type coffee table. They actually looked good and he figured that any break-in artist would grab them, and miss the good stuff in the next room. AFAIK, his home was never burglarized, so his theory has gone untested.

I once thought I was buying a POS but it turned out to be a good gun. I saw a Beretta model 418 in a gun shop for a little over $100. I have heard those old Beretta pocket pistols were good for about 4 shots then they jammed. I figured it would be a decent fun gun so I bought it anyway. I have put hundreds of rounds thru it and it has never jammed.
Well it did jam on one shooting trip but after taking it home and tearing it apart I realized I had forgotten to put a spring in.:uhoh: It is reliable enough that I carry it, and that's REALLY saying something as I'm a revolver person and that's the 1st auto I have ever shot that didn't jam on me. Not bad for a 50 year old 25acp.

I traded a buddy a "Foolex" that I picked up in Thailand for $25 for a Tafagilo .25 ACP. It is a single action that has at least a 15 pound trigger pull. I don't know who got the better deal......

Depends on personal definition of POS.
Yea, I got an old RG and Jennings .22s around as examples of what not to buy.
But ... in this current Texas heat and humidity, I sometimes have an itch to get the new shiny slide Kel-Tec .380, which some may consider a $300 POS. Time will tell ...

I've always wanted to buy a chrome Jennings 9mm, take it to the range, and shoot it with my real guns. I wonder how long a Jennings would hold up before the parts left were too small to shoot at?

At one time I wanted a Vektor CP-1. Unusual and kind of cool looking in a ray-gun kinda way. Too bad it ended up being recalled due to design/safety problems.

I have several POS guns and one's a Smith & Wesson and the other is a Colt. Both are victims of abuse and one of these days:rolleyes: , I'll get around to fixing them.:o
Now, as to those nickel plated sissy guns, no urge to own one at all.

I've already got enough stuff layin' around that falls into the 'POS' category.
So, to answer your question, do I really want a POS gun? No! Sure don't.. :uhoh:

Everybody should have a half dozen or so.
I like to use them for paperweights
One of those paperweights is a Iver Johnson 38 S&W that is one of my more accurate handguns. I carry it a lot

Depends on how much a POS the gun is. I wouldn't consider Davis/Jennings and the like. Generally, I'll reserve judgement until I actually handle a respresentative example. I might add that when I got my first Glock, I was told by many of my shooting buddies that they would never tolerate such a plastic POS. Now I have seven Glocks and most of the time, my original 19 is with me.

Sometimes I want an MPA-30/Cobray PM-11/Vucan Arms V-10 just because. Can't, though. :fire:

Skunkabilly,
a $6 can of spray-on truckbed liner from Wal-Mart will fix your peeling M1A stock, make it more grippy, and make it matte-finished. Worked for mine.
I should write Springfield Armory and tell them to make those cans of spray-on liner an option on the "Loaded coupon" you get when you buy the rifle :D

I guess the answer is yes.
I once got a Colt All American 2000, knowing they were junk. The thought was that in the future, I could show my grandkids one of the many reasons why there was no such company as Colt anymore.
I have bought some rifles that were POS's as they came, Mausers and such, for rebuilding, so yes there also.

I guess this qualifies as a POS. :D

YEs I would , they are great for driving through states that are not so lenient on you being armed in their borders , most states will confescate you weapon and issue a misdomeanor ticket . That way your not out a great carry piece .

That C&R comment was just wrong.:neener:
I've bought a few just to play with.
A Davis 380 just to get used to the idea of a small pocket auto, it lasted several hundred rounds before it devoloped a crack in the slide.
A Jennings 22 bought to ride in my tackle box, turned out to be to inaccurate to hit anything smaller than a tin can with, but was fairly reliable.
A Pheonix HP22 to replace the Jennings, a nice surprise, was reliable and accurate, wish I had kept it.
A Llama 45, still not sure what made me do that, I blame it on a stroke, best 4 shot hardball only pistol I've ever owned.
Several more, mostly from my strange obsession with 380 handguns (I ended up with 13 of them) Grendels, the RG hanging on my wall. If we move on to rifles then we're talking closets full of them.
