We all know about how much heat the 5.56mm round gets these days, and every time I open a box I confess that I am amazed at how small this cartridge really is.

But we went from the heavy hitting 7.62mm to this round, so it must have taken a big gulp on the part of the military to buy into such a radical departure in the first place. I have always assumed that the the initial test results must have been very impressive, but I have never seen them published anywhere.

Does anyone have a link or know what the conclusions were in areas such as accuracy, lethality, and if different bullet weights/barrel lengths were tested, i.e. just how did we arrive at 55 grains out of a 20 inch barrel.

Thanks in advance.

Try these:

Beyond that, I don't know. The original test results might be floating around somewhere on the net, but they are like 50 years old, so...
