XD in .45GAP

I read an article about the new Springfield XD in .45GAP. It's the same size as the .40SW version, but with an 8 round magazine (Yes, it's double stack too). Also, the only version out now is the 5" "Tactical" model. If I wanted a 5" barreled, 8 round .45, I'd take the 1911 any day (and I like the 9mm, .357, and .40 cal XDs).

Maybe, but the XD is lighter than the 1911 and 45GAP has a 10% higher chamber pressure so it hits harder for equivalent bullet weights. I believe they went for the long slide to provide the additional slide mass the 45 GAP needs because it can really batter the heck out of a gun.

As I understand it, the slide on the XD-45 will be slightly larger, and it will hold 9+1 vice 8+1.
Maybe, but the XD is lighter than the 1911...
Not really... The XD Tactical in 9mm and 40S&W weighs in at 31 ounces; the 45GAP will probably weigh slightly more because of the slide. On the other hand, an alloy framed 1911, such as my Kimber CDP, weighs in at... 31 ounces. Wow, lighter indeed...
...so it hits harder for equivalent bullet weights.
The limited test data I've found so far shows penetration and expansion numbers to be essentially identical between the 45ACP and 45GAP. In other words, there will be no difference in the mythical "stopping power" between the two rounds.

According to the article in G&A the .40S&W Tactical weighs 32.8 ounces and the .45Gap Tactical weighs 32.1 ounces. Though SA has the .40S&W listed at 41 ounces on there web page :uhoh:

why would anyone want a pistol chambered for GAP? it's going down in a stinking pile of flame

Indeed. Especially considering these first two guns offered in it from Glock and Springfield.
There's a sucker born every minute said some wise man, much of American business is based upon it.
Now if 45GAP appears in a gun sized the same as the PM40 I'd see a reason for it.

Compare the Kahr MK40 to the Kimber BP Ultra Ten II (10+1 of 45ACP). I don't see much room between these two for 45GAP to bring anything useful to the party.

I'd still see no reason for it. The ballistics out of short barreled .45 autoloaders, ACP or GAP, simply suck.
