I just found a near-mint M-49 Iranian Mauser carbine for $295. This is the variety with the milled front sight. I've never seen one for sale in this condition before, even on the internet sites. By all accounts it is worth more than $300.

Interestingly, I've since discovered that this is one of Saddam's favorite shooters. Here's a pic of him with one:

Look again. He's pictured with a Mannlicher stock rifle more than a Mauser 98. Being dictator isn't so bad after all. You get to brandish guns and everybody cheers for you.

The mannlicher I saw him with was definitely a Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine. Proveing 'there are guns for the masses and guns for the classes'.

No, the linked pic shows Saddam with an Iranian M-49. The milled sights and odd stock are the keys. I'm not aware of any other Mauser with milled front sights. The cut-out for the bolt on the stock is also very distinct. After all, Saddam is a known cruffler with a particular appreciation of Persian Mausers. He's been pictured with several.
