Here's the deal:
I'm a resident of Colorado, going to school in upstate New York. I spend about 9 months out of the year there, so I'd like to keep shooting. I've done some research on the laws regarding possession of firearms in NY, and it seems (according to http://www.nraila.org) that I cannot legally take a rifle with me when I go back next semester. Handguns are completely out. The only way I can have a rifle is if I get a hunting license.

Now, my question is this. Is there any way for me to legally keep a rifle/shotgun at school, according to state laws? Can I get a hunting license without intending to use it, or would that be frowned upon?

Interestingly, my college is (relatively) accepting about firearms--I'd have to register it and store it with the campus police, but I would have access at any time.

Thanks,
LM

265.01. Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when:

(3) He knowingly has in his possession a rifle, shotgun or firearm in or upon a building or grounds, used for educational purposes, of any school, college or university, except the forestry lands, wherever located, owned and maintained by the State University of New York college of environmental science and forestry, without the written authorization of such educational institution; or

State Laws and Published Ordnances - Firearms - New York (http://www.atf.gov/firearms/statelaws/22ndedition/newyork.pdf)

However, you should contact New York's Attorney General (http://www.oag.state.ny.us/) for the correct answer. Don't trust your freedom to us internet non-lawyer legal consultants. :) That includes the NRA and packing.org legal opinions.
