I feel like an utter moron, but I just noticed something.

The Kel-Tec P3AT is KT's .380 "Chraest! Lookit th' saeze of et!" pocket pistol.

P3AT. Three Ay Tee. Three Eigh-ty. Three Eighty. P-Three-Eighty. P380!
Very clever. I guess they wanted something more inventive than the names of their previous pistols...

I'm gonna go feel stupid for a little while..

LOL I'm not very far ahead of you I found that out last night about midnight.

For those of you that own a Kel-Tek P3AT or a P32 what can you tell me about them for CCW. I know they are low powered but my wife has small hands and has trouble handeling my Beretta 92F or Glock 26. Both 9mm.

What kind of recoil do they have? What ammo should I use for them for target and self defense etc?

I know a larger caliber would be better but something is better than nothing.

From what I've read the trigger pull isn't very heavy. How about racking the slide. How does it compare to my Beretta or Glock?

You can never have to much firepower.

Yes the designation was designed to give the caliber. It was mentioned in some media , including TFL and then again THR. :p

Don't feel bad, I don't get all the memo's either, I just happened to get this one back when the word was it was in fact in work.

Just remember this the next time I make a idiot of myself , okay the next couple of times...lets just say anytime from here on out. You can help me bang my head, or retrieve my foot from my mouth...I usually insert in about knee deep.

:)

Oh that sound you hear? It is the sound of others slapping foreheads. They are gonna act all cool and never admit they did not know either, until you posted this thread.

What kind of recoil do they have? The P32 is pretty comfortable to shoot. I suspect the 'Pthreeaytee' ;) is a bit more of a handful.

My wife's P32 seems to do fine with Winchester SilverTips. Nary a bobble.

Origins anyone? :)

Where I used to work it was common for folks to walk the little community. I ran into a customer, a physican, on my way to the bank. I had heard they had a new pet for his 4 year old son. The son was outside surrounded by the cute gals from the bank, getting all the attention a young boy and his dog can absorb.

"What's his name?"
MD
"Because Dad is a Doctor"
No

Typical 4 yr old boy, being made over by ...huffs his breath to get his hair out of his eyes petting and hugging his dog. I'm stumped, the gals are stumped his dad his grinning. So it appeared it was up to me to get an explanation.

"MD?"
Yeah its MY DOG...so I named him MD

Kids...why make it difficult - when one can keep it simple. :)

Hmmm. This rather reminds me of a fellow I knew who'd marked some rooms on a gaming map with 'MT'.

We were all rather confused... until we started to notice that all those rooms were... empty... :D

She knew NOTHING about guns and is starting to ask questions. One night we were having a discussion about what stuff shots and the kick and the stopping power, etc. I showed her a .38 shell, a .380 shell, a .22 shell, a 30.30 shell and explained the difference. She said, oh, so the PPK shoots the same a the 3AT. I was amazed at her knowledge. How could she know tihs? How did she know this? Then, I realized that she didn't, and I figured out that the 3AT = .380

The way I heard the story, Kel-Tec had to call it the P-3AT because someone else (SIG?) owned the name P-380. They wanted to call it the P-380 because of the precedent of the P-32. But since the name was taken, they want to P-3AT.

What kind of recoil do they have? Only a touch worse than the P-32. More push, less sharp. I have shot 100 rounds in a session with my P-3AT several times, and not had a sore hand. But I'm a more experienced shooter, so a newbie may not have the same experience.

What ammo should I use for them for target and self defense etc? Lotta disussion on that one...I like the Remington 102gr. Golden Sabre. But I shoot a lotta handloads in it, too.

I know a larger caliber would be better but something is better than nothing. Agreed! And its a lot better than a P-32!

From what I've read the trigger pull isn't very heavy. How about racking the slide. How does it compare to my Beretta or Glock?

The trigger pull is not very heavy, but it is long. Does take some getting used to.

The slide of the P-3AT is harder to rack than the P-32, but prolly not much different from your Beretta or Glock.

Size? Well, the P-3AT and spare mag in a pocket holster is about exactly the size and shape of a wallet. The kind that folds $ bills in half. So you can carrry it anywhere you would carry a wallet. That's pretty much anywhere.

Weight is very low, too. IMHO it is the best tradeoff between carryability and power around. Owners of Khars will probably disagree, but I find them a bit too big for pocket carry.

Heck if I know - exactly. :o somewhere in NY .

I had a sales rep from NY casually mention this. He and another sales rep , also from NY were shooting the breeze. I happened to pick up on it.

With all the bouroughs and whatnot up there I get lost. These were older gentleman talking about how some areas have changed with perceptions and cultures. How others have always been "districts" for certain cultures and all.

I had to use a map to find out where Plum Island is located when I read Demille's book Plum Island. It is a real place, , some serious testing by the Dept Of Agriculture for Mad Cow Disease, eboli, and other nasty stuff . The Island has legends of Captain Kidd and buried treasure as well...

A good book...the LEO in it ...oh he is good...real good.

Steve, I'm pretty sure (ok, I'm positive) SoHo is South of Houston St. (lower Manhattan) not Hobson. You might have heard them pronounce it house-ton (as opposed to hughs-ton), which I believe is the correct local pronunciation, and it sounded like Hobson. The New Yorkers took the naming idea from a similar district in London.

More SOHO
As I recall, the district in london was a small village of mainly rural and the term was a war cry or hunting cry.

Mal H
July 12, 2004, 09:10 PM
I think you're right, faustulus. The London district is much much older than the one in NYC. For well over a hundred years, it has been one of those 24 hour districts like the modern "Village" is in NYC.

The "residents" of London's Soho are unbelievable. I got propositioned there as I was walking down the street with my wife at my side!

We've veered off course long enough - now back to your regularly scheduled P3AT thread. (I still can't believe that one escaped me until this thread!)

They did have real thick accents, I admit I may have heard wrong...they ain't from the South. Okay now I have to look up the London district. I learned something - thanks

Dave R's reason for the P-3AT designation is the one I recall being discussed on TFL.

I could read that ...no problem with accent or dialect. :p
