What revolver did Mel Gibson have in Payback? Looks like an N-frame.

In any case it's good to see the movie hero (or in this case, antihero) packing a wheelgun for a change.

I believe it was the 357 S&W Magnum (Mod 27) but I haven't watched Payback in quite a while. Did you know it's a remake of Lee Marvin's fine Point Blank? That one Lee uses what looks to be a 44 Magnum (S&W, of course!).

That was an awfully big wheelgun. I'd like to say a .44 mag, but I'm not sure.

I watched it tonight. I think it was a 27 with a tappered barrel.

it had a tapered barrel and a poilsh finish so it was definitly a 27 in .357 Mag.

What's the difference between a 27 and a 29 other than the caliber?

I too am pretty sure it was a S&W Model 27. Cool movie.

Couldn't have been a Smith 27, as far as I know they never made one with a 15-20 round cylinder, which Mel definately had, Guess it could have been a custom job, not sure who installs those though, :D

Just watched the movie on DVD and Hi Definition tv. Pretty certain that at the beginning of the movie Gibson purchases a M29 with a 4" barrel. There are several close ups of the gun and it has the bull barrel and large cylinder of the 44 mag. Don't forget that for several years the 29 also had that great high polish finish. That's the gun that he frames the corrupt cops with by the way. At the end when Gibson's character is in the car with David Paymer he takes a 4" M28 or maybe a 27 from him. I looked at the scene where he sticks the gun in Lucy Liu's face and I'm confident that it's a .357 Smith N frame. It has a tapered barrel with the top rib and the shorter cylinder. But I don't know if it's a 27 or a 28.

Do you think I waited to long to post a reply?

Well you know I saw this thread, but first I had to get an HDTV and then a copy of Payback. Of course there is also the fact that I didn't join THR until September of last year, but by gosh when I decide to post a reply I don't forget. It may take awhile, but I don't forget. I'm like an elephant in that respect.
