Somehow some water got into the magazine of my 870. It looks like it sat in there for a while because the rust is bad. Not quite to the point where it would start pitting but bad. Is there an easy way of getting it out or am I stuck with it?:(

Wisps of 0000 steel wool on a bronze brush works. If you have a cordless drill , this can be used to save some elbow grease. G96, Breakfree, Kroil can be applied to help.

I'd check the rest of the gun, between stock and receiver, forearm...this may not be apparent, if the mag has rust might be a clue for rust elsewhere.

Yes, I've got an 870 and an Ithaca 37 that were RIGHT below a leak in the roof for about a month. Both were turned Action Up. I dumped water out of the 870 but I'd cleaned it a month earlier with Break Free. All that I had to do was detail strip the trigger group to remove the rust. My Ithaca is another story. The water was underneath in on the newspaper and the whole matted top is covered in rust. I hadn't cleaned the gun in years. In fact, I had them out on the table to clean but didn't know about the leak until a week after the first storm.

At any rate, yes... steel wool is the best thing for removing rust in the situation you described. A little compressed air wouldn't hurt so you can blow out anything that might be residual.

Rust removal is one thing Breakfree CLP is very good at. I would follow the other suggestions but use CLP. CorrosionX or Eezox will really help prevent this in the future. CLP is not a bad corrosion inhibitor either - much better than most oils. Just wipe out the excess so it doesn't collect dust, lint etc. Don't forget to wipe down the spring.

I believe that in addition to Eezox, Corrosion X, FP-10 and BF CLP, there's something else that BF puts out called "BreakFree Collector" that is supposed to be specifically oriented to preventing corrosion for long periods (i.e. like 5 years), without the C and L that the standard CLP offers. It is supposed to go on thicker than the CLP, but no special cleaning is required (as with, for example, Cosmoline) when you break out your weapon to fire it

RIG , proven since 1935
RIG+P proven forget year it came out...

This stuff works no matter temp extremes, light film barely seen or felt...

I like simple...I have also been known to shoot in rain , sleet and snow...in freezing temps or 120* in the summer...RIG works, great for externals...

I like RIG the best, simple and works...

For new stuff, TW25B
