Some gun rights advocates steaming about visit
By RANDY ERICKSON/Editor

Gun rights advocates from all over the country are up in arms over what they consider a betrayal of their cause by the Gunslick Trap Club.

In the wake of Saturday's visit by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, letters from as far as Michigan, Missouri and Wyoming were submitted to this newspaper criticizing the club.

The writers maintain the Gunslick Trap Club was duped into helping Kerry project a pro-gun image, even though he has a history of supporting what they consider infringements on gun rights.

"John Kerry is an extremist anti-gun advocate who, given the chance, would outlaw the civilian ownership of all guns, including even toy plastic 'cowboy type' guns. This is his history," a writer from Missouri writes. "Furthermore, he is an anti-hunting extremist and supports the goals of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)."

Ken Bethke, a club board member and former president, said he had not heard any feedback as of early this week, either from club members or from other gun rights advocates.

"I'm certainly not going to be surprised if I hear something," he said. "There's going to be some people who think we shouldn't have" allowed the Kerry event on club grounds.

After being asked to host the Kerry campaign event by U.S. Rep. Ron Kind's brother, club member Jack Schultz sought Bethke's blessing. Bethke said he figured the event would be good publicity for the club and for the sport of trap shooting in general, and so and gave the event a thumbs-up.

"I'm not even a Kerry supporter. That had no bearing on my thoughts," Bethke said. "If it had been Bush, I would have said the same thing. It's a public club. We don't have a sign at the entrance that says 'No Democrats allowed.' "

Schultz, who is a Democrat and a member of the National Rifle Association, said the writers are misrepresenting Kerry.

"I don't think he's anti-gun by any means," Schultz said, noting that Kerry enjoys hunting.

Kerry told the press at the trap club Saturday he has no plans to propose new gun control measures, although better enforcement of existing laws is needed.

Schultz said he shares Kerry's view that it is not an undue restriction of rights to keep people from owning assault rifles.

"You don't need a machine gun or a bazooka in your house," Schultz said.

Club member Terry Herbst, who let Kerry use his shotgun during Saturday's event and sold the Massachusetts senator a club membership, said he thought it was absurd to characterize Kerry as anti-gun.

"If he would have been anti-gun, why would he be out picking up a gun and shooting," he said.

"I don't think he's anti-gun by any means," Schultz said, noting that Kerry enjoys hunting. Not the same thing.

"If he would have been anti-gun, why would he be out picking up a gun and shooting," he said. He voted for every gun control bill you moron.

"You don't need a machine gun or a bazooka in your house," Schultz said. And you don't NEED to shoot clay pigeons.

Trap is shot with a single shot shotgun. There was a bill in Wisconsin a couple years back that banned all buy single shot shotguns. The author said you can still shoot trap and hunt that way, so that's all you NEED.

Schultz is a NRA member for cover - any law abiding gun owner reasonable familiar with law knows full auto/destructive devices like machine guns and anti tank rocket launchers have been restricted since tyhe National Firearms Act of 1934, and the addendum from the Gun Control Act of 1968. Any NRA member who doesn't know the differance between a true "Assault rifle" and what Ruger, Bushmaster, DSA, and Century sells are NOT, doesn't read any NRA literature, pay au attention to the goings on of the Assoc, and merely has his card to "defend" himself in arguments, as in' Hey, I'm an NRA member, don't jump on ME" Cheap for that $25 a year.....

Betrayal is right, and the club should be closed,or sold to owners who like staying in business....

This person is either a phony, put up to it by the Democrats themselves, or a complete imbecile. This is a perfect example of the types of ignorant idiots we have in our ranks.

:scrutiny:

Goes to show you there are some 'pro-gun' people as dumb as the most anti-gun bigot extremists out there.

Newsflash: Picking up a shotgun for the cameras during silly season hardly makes one 'pro gun.'

Trapshooters seem to be some of the most naive and elitist of the shooting fraternity. They don't feel threatened since they shoot those fancy singleshots and double guns.Us peasents with our pumps are the problem...yadda yadda.

Any time I walk up to the Trap/ Skeet range at my club I am assured of being swept by the muzzle of a shotgun with a closed breech.

The trap shooters are the least safe gun handlers in our club by a wide margin.

"I don't think he's anti-gun by any means," Schultz said, noting that Kerry enjoys hunting. Kinda makes you wonder why he voted for Ted Kennedy's bill to outlaw 30-30.
:scrutiny:

"If he would have been anti-gun, why would he be out picking up a gun and shooting," he said. He'd do that in order to mislead mouthbreathing, politically ignorant dim bulbs like you into voting for him.

You guys on here, just don't understand!! King Kerry is ofcourse pro hunting, for "his"elite crowd on the "King's" land with "his' permission.
However for You peons you do not need to go hunting unless be "rewarded" for being good little tax paying liberals.

As far as the "shotgun" crowd is concerned, all those morons seem to care about is their shotgun and breaking clays. These morons will sell those of us who like handguns or god forbid really like "assault weapons" to shoot in our sport like high-power or three gun.

Even the dumb French got rid of their French King 200 years ago, and now the lame-stream media wants the U.S. to have a usless "French King".

If you want to see Kerry's voting record on gun issues, go to the Brady Campaign (yes, that's what I said!) www.bradycampaign.org/facts/scorecard. They list the voting record of all Representatives and Senators...sort by name or state...on all 21 gun bills to date. Kerry voted the Brady anti-gun position on all 21! He has a 100% rating by the Brady group.

The Brady Campaign...yes, that virulently anti-gun group!...has the best detailed voting record I've been able to find.:D

Who's that dumb a$$ that equates the AWB and supporting it to being against machine guns and bazookas? This is a major problem for not only gunowners, but the ill informed public as well. They are willing to vote away their rights for something they know nothing about. Sad. Truly Sad.

Kerry told the press at the trap club Saturday he has no plans to propose new gun control measures, although better enforcement of existing laws is needed.
Translation: In order to avoid admitting my intentions to outlaw and confiscate all firearms from the populace when elected, I have intentionally NOT formulated the specifics of the plan to implement said seizure. Therefore, I can honestly (?) say that "I have no plans" to propose new gun control measures. (The plans will be forthcoming upon my election.)

link not valid now ???

Apologies to all citizens for our senators.

If taxation without representation is unconstitutional and since my senator John Kerry has missed more votes this year than any other senator, ............shouldn't I then be able to get some kind of refund ?

He couldn't make it back from his campaigning to Washington to be the one deciding vote necessary to extend unemployment benefits, BUT

he did make it back especially to vote on the gun manufacturer's liability.
Need I tell anyone which way he voted?

aut2no, the above link will still get you to the Brady Campaign site. If you hit ther "facts" tab at the top of their page, you can find your way to their detailed voting record of each congressman on 21 anti-gun bills.

I just LOVE using their site to help us vote! It also provides basis to challenge some of the current statements made by the candidates.:D
