Ruger or CZ

I am considering getting a 9mm pistol to complement my revolver arsenal. I would like some advice on what I consider to be entry level 9mm's.... Ruger's 95 or CZ's 75B. What do you all think and why? The gun would primarily be for range but, might be used for car/concealed carry.

I've owned both and favor the CZ for one reason,i was able to charge the grips for a better fit.The ruger polymer seems to be very slick and i wonder why ruger doesn't add checking or texture to the front and rear area of the grip.I found the ruger too slick and even worse when i have sweaty hands.Other than that they were both about same to me as far as trigger pull and sights

I'd favor a 75SA over the 75B, yet some people demand the DA
option.

Is the 75B (military) cheaper than the P95? Would you buy
the Decocker versions? Both guns are very much strong
and reliable, and that is what counts with a defensive 9mm.

I have the Ruger P95. It has served me well. No malfs, eats any ammo fed it, reliable and as accurate as I'll ever need. I did put a Hogue grip sleeve on it and it has vastly improved the 'slick' issue.

No experience with the CZ. From what I have read, the CZ owners seem pretty satisfied with that particular line of handguns.

No doubt the CZ75. It is "entry level" in price only.

I've had both the P-95 and several CZs.

The slick grip on the P-95 is easily improved with a Hogue Handall.

The trigger on the P-95 is harder to get smooth and crisp; some gunsmiths simply won't work on the trigger.

The trigger on the CZ is generally pretty good, and can be greatly improved. (It can even be made single-action only, and superbly so.)

Both are durable, reliable guns. Hi-caps are available for either at good prices. (Any mag for any 9mm Ruger auto works with the P-95.)

The double-action trigger pull on the CZ is very long. Followup single action trigger pulls are short. If you don't want to carry cocked and locked, you need to try the DA trigger.

With the Ruger, the pull is long, but not AS long as the CZ. You can't do cocked and locked.

See which gun fits your hand the best, and which trigger works best with your hand. You can't go wrong with either.

CZ's warranty and customer service are very good; Ruger's is outstanding.

Both are fine pistols, but I'd take the CZ. Better ergonomics, excellent reputation for reliability and accuracy, and a good-looking design that carries well due to its slimness. The Ruger is sturdy and reliable, but challenged in the aesthetics department.

I second Walt Sherrill, Both are good. The handall greatly improves the feel of the Ruger. You see post on ergonomics, thats a personal thing. What fits you may not fit me. I bought a CZ 75 S/A because I had heard it compared to a Browning High Power in ergonomics, no way close for me. High Power is the hands down winner (for me). Either will need a trigger job if you want smooth/crisp pull. The CZ S/A is no different, I fingered a bunch before I bought one and the all raised the hammer about an 1/8" while you pulled the trigger. Accuracy is very good on average with the CZ 75s, the Ruger was about par for a combat auto, which for me was about the same as the Glock (excluding the 34/35 series), HK usp, Beretta, Taurus lines.

For concealed carry the std CZ and Ruger are hard to conceal. I havent tried the compact CZ, but it might be a better choice for carry. Dont let the recoil spring on the CZ scare you (it looks like hell) they shoot good. Either will shoot anytime you need them. Your best bet may be to buy one of each and shoot until you break either and let us know how they shoot. If I had $350 to spend I would skip both and find a used High Power. There a few surplus guns floating around.

Of your 2 choices, I voted CZ. The "other" option just adds in so many variables into the mix.

All tho I'm not a bag fan of them, I just want to be the first to say, "GET A GLOCK!" ;)

I voted for the CZ 75B. However, I would also urge you to take a look at the Springfield XD-9, if you are inclined to consider a polymer pistol.

Hi Power.

But I would prefer the CZ75B to the Ruger. Hmm, the Ruger is like a GM K car. The CZ is a Lincoln. I'd still prefer a Hi Power ;)......

I had a chance to shoot a CZ-75BD (decocker) today (as well as a Beretta 92FS & a S&W 5906) at a new gun range in College Station. Going in, I thought I would like the Beretta & the S&W more than the CZ. But actually SHOOTING them proved different.

I was really impressed w/ the CZ's ergonomics & controllability in rapid-fire shooting; and its accuracy takes a back seat to none. Feels a lot like my 1991A1, but shoots a lot more bullets... :D Add the price for a brand new one compared to the used prices for the other two, and CZ wins hands down...

My purchase list going INTO the range:
1. Beretta
2. S&W
3. CZ

My purchase list going OUT OF the range:
1. CZ
2. S&W
3. Beretta

That's just my opinion. YYMV....

The CZ, its just a great gun, and the price is very nice also. Check out Hakan's grips for it too.

CZ hands down, by a mile, going away.

Despite which, Hakan is one sick puppy.

I came down to the same two choices. When I held both side by side it was pretty easy for me to choose the CZ. The CZ was just more comfortable. I suggest you do the same, shoot both if you can, at a minimum go hold both.

AND you can get some Hakan grips: http://www.imageseek.com/hakan

I have recently come to the conclusion that the .22 Kadet kit for the CZ will save me money, as its so easy to shoot 300+ rounds at each visit to the gun range. The money I will save buying .22's instead of 9mm should pay for the Kadet kit in about 2 months.

I owned a Ruger P89, I own a CZ 75B. I vote CZ all the way.

Both are extremely reliable, with the Ruger being slightly more reliable.

The Ruger wasn't very accurate, the CZ is incredibly accurate.

The Ruger felt like a brick, the CZ feels to most people like it was just made custom for their hand.

The Ruger felt crude, the CZ feels like a high quality firearm.

The Ruger is aluminum alloy yet weighs about the same as the CZ.

The Ruger has a slightly shorter DA trigger, but the feel of the trigger (smooth and relatively light) on the CZ is lightyears ahead of the Ruger, and don't even get me started on the SA trigger pull.

Both are virtually indestructable (though the Ruger may be a little more durable).

Both are very inexpensive and great values, though in most areas the Ruger may be about $20-30 less.

They both have some advantages over the other, but the Ruger has some real difficiencies (especially in comparison to the CZ) while the CZ holds its own quite well even in areas that the Ruger is a little better.

I thought I was a "Freak": I have had TWO CZ 75B's(2nd was a replacement on warranty)and, when not breaking slidestops & extractors, failing to feed and/or eject, is a very good looking, comfortable and accurate pistol. However, I recently spoke with a fellow who works with a large gunshop chain: I told him my experiences and he just laughed.
"You're not alone. Our store sent LOTS of them back to CZ USA over the same issues." Mine is still back at CZ on warranty repair. I was told 4-6 weeks...it's going on seven. I just got disgusted and bought a S&W 910 9mm a few weeks ago: it has proven to be flawless in reliability and is a joy to shoot. I considered a Ruger P89, but it just didn't fit my hand: the S&W does! Even after my stressfull experience, I'll keep the CZ for a range gun because it is so darn accurate!(When it ain't jamming)

I hear a lot of good things about CZ and I'm not knocking them.
Around East Tennessee, you are going to get better prices on a Ruger.
CZs are practically nonexistant around here.
I didn't buy my Ruger for it's looks.
In a world where Glock and HK pistols sell like they do, let's not even go there. :p
And yes, it could be a little more ergonomic.
But, it is a very accurate gun in my hands, and that is saying a lot.
It is rugged, reliable, and not at all picky about what it eats.
Throw in excellent customer service, and the fact that it is American made, and it's not really a bad choice.

(There's a store in CA that sells chainguns (re: chain gun store)? I'm there. Oh, CA, I'm not.)

I voted for CZ based on my experience.

Later I bought a BHP.

I like old Ruger revolvers, though.

John

(STOP THE PRESSES: CZ problems in CALIFORNIA, right? 10-round mags? I used my CZ 10rounder once and it misfed and I've never used it since. OTOH, the original CZ 15 works, the 2 gun show CZ 15s work, and all the aftermarket 15 and 17 rounders work. Hmmm.)
