My friend called me up to tell me he bought a 624 with an 8-3/8 barrel he paid $500. Was that a good deal? Was that 624 a catolog item or was it a special run??

At the higher end of the price scale. It was a standard production.

Please, call me Al.
I was in a rush when I posted and may have been a tad wrong. The price of $500 is still at the high end. While the 624 model was a standard production gun the majority of lengths of barrel were 4", 6 1/2". The three inchers were special runs and the 8 3/8" was a special order length. So yes it could command a slight premium. I apologize for the confusion( I am getting senile).

Ahhh,

Thanks Al. I was about to post that I don't remember seeing that long barrel on the stainless .44 Special. We still have Smith .44 Spec's popping up used around here, and I need another one.

No problem Al ,I had a feeling that 8-3/8 might have been a special order. My friend is like a kid at Christmas the ten day cooling off period in the Prk is killing him.:D

Stainless N-frames around here seem to command higher than book values. $500 wouldn't be at all outta line, especially for a cherry gun w/box & docs.

My friend was in the right place at the right time and older Gentleman had brought in 6 S&W revolvers into the local shop and my friend was there. The 624 came with the original docs and box and the original sales receipt was still in the box. The 624 appears unfired . The older gentleman had told my friend his brother had passed away and they were going thru his house and found the 624 and 5 other S&W revolvers under his bed. My friend check back with the shop and the other 5 didnt even last a day they flew out of the store.:)
