I have a S&W top break in 38 S&W double action with the oval sideplate on the left hand side.Serial number 701xx.Would anybody have a explodes diagram for it that the could scan and send to me?

I don't know of any exploded view drawings. There are drawings showing the parts laid out, but this doesn't show what-goes-where. Be aware that they can be difficult to disassemble/reassemble, and a set of the correct pin punches and screwdrivers is absolutely necessary. You'll find that the lockwork resembles a fine watch.

My $.02 says don't disassemble that gun unless you absolutely have to for repairs. If it is dirty, clean it by immersing it in a cleaner (I don't dare say "gasoline" any more) but don't try to take it apart.

Completely apart or partially disassembled? The first thing you need too do is determine if any parts are missing. Then you'll have to decide if it's worth buying the tools to work on it. Jim is absolutely correct. This is not a good gun to take apart ... even if you know what you're doing.

All the action is torn down.The barrel and cylinder assembly is together.I found a parts diagram for it and am going to do a parts check and see if everything is there.What I need is a diagram that show all the parts and there relationship to one another.

Well for purposes of Identification you have a Smith & Wesson .38 Double Action. Second Model. The serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1880 or 1881.

I can "try" to scan you a copy of written instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble a S&W .38 Double Action (Top-break) revolver with a picture of the numbered parts. Sorry, but that's all I have.
