AK open sights questions

They seem to be shooting about a foot to the left. I know how to adjust up and down, but not left and right. How do they work? They have a front post and the rear sight is adjustable. It has an "A" on it and the numbers 1-8 in a zig zag pattern. WHat do these numbers mean? Yards? 1-800 yards?

The rear sight is only adjustable for up and down (Elevation). That is why the numbers are there, they are calibrated with the standard drop for a 7.62x39 cartidge, to meters. The side to side (Windage) adjustment is made with the front sight. It can be "pushed"over with a C-clamp (carefully), or tapping it with a mallet and brass punch. Remember to move the front sight in the direction OPPOSITE that you want the bullet impact to move. In your case, move the front sight to the left a bit, and keep sliding it over until you`re zeroed. Good luck!

B Square makes the nicest front sight tool I've seen. Costs about $20. The problem with some AK's is, the front sight post isnt always centered once you get the rifle zeroed. I have one that was pretty bad, almost touching one of the "ears" of the guard. Global Trades, and some others, have RPK windage adjustable rear sights that will fit. They work well but you will have to confirm your zeros at the distances on the slider, as the sights from different countries dont always interchange as far as zeros go. I just zero mine to 300 yards and leave it.
