Why is this the only shotgun (that I'm aware of, anyway) that is billed as having a heavy-walled barrel?

I know that Mossberg upgraded the basic 590's plastic trigger housing and safety selector with metal ones in the "A1", but why the barrel upgrade? Someone said that it had something to do with Navy shipboard requirements, but I'm not sure what that means.
