What is the take on this gun? I have never heard of it but I might be able to one up for about $100. Is it a deal or just average? Are they decent guns or junk?

The Maverick 88 is the "economy" version of the Mossberg 500. The main difference being the location of the safety. On the Mavericks they mount the safety on the trigger guard.

For $100 I'd pick it up, if for no other reason than having a beater on hand.

If memory serves, the receiver was alloy on the 88's. A friend has had one for years and it has never failed to fire or eject.A good value for the money....just as Mossbergs are.:)
I believe Mossy barrels are interchangable on these guns.

IIRC,it's a 500 based econo-pump made just South of the Rio Grande.

For $100, if it feels good, get it. The Mossies are fairly durable, and parts should be available if needed well into this century.

The Maverick series is Mossberg's 'entry-level value-priced' shotgun line. As I recall, Maverick Arms was based in Eagle Pass, TX.

The Mossy 500 series barrels and MOST other parts are directly interchangeable within guage and capacity.

Unless it is just plain worn-out or a rust bucket, $100 is a decent buy for a used Maverick/Mossberg. I bought a Maverick 88 in 1991 on a closeout for $106 [last one in stock at end of hunting season]. Came with a 28" modified choke plain barrel. Very simple shotgun, but it goes BANG! every time I mash the trigger.

If you don't plan to shoot pallets full of shells you'll like it. I had a Maveric 88 a few years ago that I used as a beater to take on boating/camping trips. It paterned well and went bang everytime..and I wouldn't have been all broken up if the canoe tiped and it got lost. I took my new HK FP6 Carbon Fiber 12guage camping/hog hunting the other week-end. About 10 minutes into the stalk I steped into a sink hole and droped waste deep into the muck. My brand new beautiful pump (and my brand new Hi-Tec Magnums, and the rest of me) got coated in stagnant swamp water and cretatious mire. I was REALLY wishing I had taken the Maveric. The gun still functioned perfectly, and cleaned up (3 days later...note to self, bring cleaning kit next time) without blemish, but it still made me want to cry.

For the money, Maverics are great guns. Like has been said, if its not trashed, go for it.

Sounds good for $100.
