personally i think that the AR is the easiest platform to build on (short of a mauser or other bolt action). the FAL is a little bit more complicated. that reminds me, i have an FAL parts kit sitting around right now that i need to build. anywho, if you want to learn more about building AR's, go to www.AR15.com and for FAL's go to www.falfiles.com

AR can be assembled with some basic tools. If you want to install your own barrels, add a vise, action block and barrel wrench to the list.

The first rifle that I built from the ground up was an Imbel FAL. It took me almost 6 months, a lot of research and required a sizable investment in tools. A week of that was spent test firing and tweaking it. I still have a second STG-58 kit that I'm working on.

Later on I built an AR. It took two weeks to collect all the parts and tools then one evening to build it. Even though I barreled my own upper reciever, the tool investment was much lower. I built a second AR about two months later and would have built it even sooner but was waiting on a backordered barrel from Bushmaster. Both were completely reliable as soon as they were sighted in.

Building the FAL was enjoyable and it's a great, reliable rifle now that it's finished. One of my favorites in fact. It just required a lot more money time and patience. The AR went together like Legos in comparison. I must add though that much of the time on the FAL was spent completely disassembling the parts kits, sandblasting and refinishing almost every part with GunKote. Building a FAL starts with a used rifle parts kit with the receivers chopped, where ARs are built from all brand new parts.
