Well it seems that a friend of a friend has a 6mm 788 is in search of a magazine for his rifle. I went to Gun Parts Corp(numrich) and although they list the part it is out of stock.

Do you know where to find such a magazine? Or can another caliber magazine work? I have not seen the gun and have no experience with the 788.

I really appreciate any information about the rifle, the magazine, or places to find hard to find gun parts.

Thanks -Bevr

Well, you have two options. These magazines are VERY scarce. You cannot use any other magazine, the 6mm was a unique one. They are available sporadically. I've seen them as low as $75 and as high as $150 from time to time. If you see a 6mm 788 at a gun-show, the owner will most likely be hiding the magazine for fear of it getting stolen. Either that, or he will not even have the magazine. The second option is th have a gunsmith mill or bend you a single-shot adaptor. The adaptor can simply screw onto the magazine catch screw hole. It's simple to make out of a strip of sheet-metal. I suppose you could use the gun as a single-shot as-is or maybe cut out the front of a .308 magazine so that the bullets hang out, but it will still probably feed one extra round. Do you follow me here? Just cut a notch in the front of the magazine so that you can slip a single 6mm cartridge in and the bullet will hang out a bit. You don't want to go further than that or else you'd weaken the magazine body.

I also know somebody who is looking for Remington 788 6mm magazines. Looks like they are still out of them in the link shown. Anybody know where one might be able to obtain some? I'm gonna check out Numrich right now.

Blah, just checked they don't have any either...

The .243 one doesn't work for 6mm does it???

Well, just to add a little fuel to this particular fire, according to my edition of Cartridges of the World, the base and rim diameters for the .243 and the 6mm Rem. are almost identical (.473" vs. .472"), but the case length is about 0.188" longer for the 6mm. Now, unless the body of the magazine is actually longer for the 6mm version (I've used my .243 and 7-08 magazines interchangably), you MAY be able to use the .243 magazine. I'd try some 6mm cartridges in the .243 magazine just to see if they fit. Then try running them through the gun if they fit the magazine. Of course, if the 6mm cartridges won't fit, then they won't fit.

My $0.02.

Well, just never mind. Seems someone on another thread here knows that there is an actual difference in the 6mm mags that makes it so the .243 mags won't feed the 6mm properly. Learn something new every day.

I also don't think the shorter magazines work properly in the longer well. IIRC, you MIGHT be able to load a single 6mm in the top of a 308 magazine therefore getting a two-shot rifle.

On this subject, mentioning Chuck Lutz as a possible source for 6MM mags. He modifys .308 mags to sort of work.
Don't deal with him unless you are close enough to go roust his cheating ???, the other side of the country isn't close enough, he stiffed me on two magazines I returned for further modification, as they didn't fit a): my rifle or b) the AI round that the original handeled smoothly. He promised either to return them, working, or refund my money. He then moved, and refused to return phone calls, or Emails.
Now that I have a current address on him, I think I'll look into mail fraud charges...:fire:

Swifter,
I just glass bedded a 700 BDL in 6mm that I payed Mr. Lutz to "accurize".
All he did was a halfazz job at opening the barrel channel and use some sort of lubricant on everything that made the rifle stink of manure.
The barrel rubbed on one side and the action shifted left and right.
I went from a 3/4 to 1/2" rifle with Remington factory V-MAX to a 1.5-2" rifle with every handload I tried. Split groups every time.
I'm praying that the bedding brings the rifle back and cursing Chuck at the same time.

In 1989 I purchased a 788 Remington in 6mm Rem at a gun show minus the mag. It was only latter that I learned I had been snookered. In the days before the internet the only thing I knew how to do was to call Remington. They gave me the number of a gunsmith in Penn. that converts 7-08 788 mags to 6mm Remington. I orderedtwo of them for $30.00 each (quite a price in 1989). I suggest a call to Remington. Maybe they still have this guy's number.
