Does anyone have experience (preferred) or knowledge about Wolf Performance Ammunition?

I see that ammoman.com has 45ACP for $90 for 500 rounds. I was going to get some practice ammo for my Sig P220, but if its going to f***-up my gun then no thanks.

All I know is that its Russian, and they claim its "top Quality".

AFAIK, the new Wolf polymer coat should not have the sticky lacquer extraction problems of the old Wolf.

HOWEVER,

1911 Tuner has said that the case dimensions of .45 ACP Wolf are not in spec and can cause FTE problems. I wouldn't use if just for that reason. S&B is fairly inexpensive and works fine.

I'm sure you'll hear all kinds opinions about Wolf ammo. Personally, I only shoot it in my Commie guns. Everything else gets brass cases.
Ditto on the S&B. Good quality and fairly cheap.

One of the hottest topics of conversation on this board is Wolf Ammo. If you use the search function you will find thousands of posts about it. One piece of advice: read all the information posted, but only pay attention to those that say they have actually tried it. Everything else is typical internet crap of repeating something they read somewhere else on the internet or stating an opinion based on speculation, and thus is a waste of bandwidth.

Yes, I have used Wolf in .45 ACP. I bought 500 rounds of it after reading one of the last Wolf Ammo threads. I fired all 500 rounds of it at a local steel plate match held on Tuesday nights. I fired all 500 rounds of it out of a Colt 1911, Series 80 with no modifications of any kind. It was 100% reliable and was plenty accurate for these matches. I noticed no performance difference between it, and any other ammo I have used for the same purpose. I have never fired it on paper. I fully intend to buy it again.

I like Wolf so does almost all of my guns (my P3AT doesn't nor does my SMC-380 other than that, no problems). But 45ACP should be about $60-65 per 500 + shipping, so $90 for 500 seems high even if shipping is included.

I've fired many thousands of rounds of Wolf through several diffirent guns, including more than 2000 rounds through my Springfield XD9. No problems at all.

I have used Wolf .45 and it functions just fine in my SA 1911, never any problems. At shows I can pick it up for about $55 per 500rds, online I tend to order from www.midwayusa.com, there it runs about $66 for 500rds.

You can buy Sellier&Belliot for $8.25 a box + shipping from www.natchezss.com. I use S&B in everything from .25 cal thru .45 cal, and never had a problem with any of it. You can also buy CCI Blazer aluminum cased .45 for $7.19 a box if you buy a case of 1,000 rounds. I deal exclusively with Natchez, and they are good people, with good customer service.

I can't speak about the newer Wolf withe plastic coating, but here's a poll we did, some time back. Roughly 55% of the folks that use the older Wolf had some problem or another; the remaining 45% had a trouble-free experience.

(I suspect, too, because I didn't do the best job of designing the poll, some of the answers got double-counted, as two problems on one outing counted the same as two good experiences.)

Still enough problems, though, to make me leary of it.

Try it and see.


(I would suspect that the new plastic-coated stuff will be less troublesome.)

Buy a couple boxes, try it out in your hog-leg & see what happens.

If it works, buy more. If not, buy something else.

BTW, I have shot a bundle of it in .45ACP, .40S&W, and 9mm. No problems.

I've shot a couple thousand rounds of it (45 ACP) through my SA Mil-spec with 100% reliability. It is better than UMC as far as I'm concerned. This is the newer polymer coated ammo.

You -may-, depending on shipping, be able to do better on a cost-per-round basis with MFS ammo, from aim surplus. It's $90/600, but that doesn't include shipping. It's also brass cased, boxer primed, and generally fine stuff in my experience... :)

Most Gun Shows have two or three vendors selling Wolf 45ACP for $60-65 + tax per 500 rounds.

www.jgsales.com or www.sportsmansguide.com is where I usually order it from at about the same price. Since shipping ammo runs about 2X what sales tax is around here, I usually try to get it at Gun Shows if I'm only buying 500-1000 rounds, for larger quanties I order onlone and let the UPS or FedEx guy do the heavy lifting.

I'm with the choir; no problems with .45 or 9mm. I pay $6.90/box for .45 & $4.90/box for 9mm at The Gun Cellar in Hoover, AL. So far, that's the cheapest retail I've found in the Birmingham area.

I have shot thousands of founds of wolf through several 1911s and 9mms with very few problems. When the 3000 rounds I have in the basement get shot this summer I will be buying more.

It's fine. It's a little dirty and it smells wierd, but it's accurate and it feeds. I buy .45 for $139/1000 rounds shipped from J&G.

it's BRIGHT and smoky. i've tried quite a bit in 9mm and 45, no problems at all. heck of a job to clean it afterwards though. i just stick with S&B and CCI Blazer for that reason alone.

What is it about the phrase 'top quality Russian ammo' that always strikes me as being so funny? It just doesn't roll off the tongue like 'top quality Russian vodka.'

Anyway, Wolf .22LR ammo is very good, but it's not made in Russia either.

Never used Wolf 45, but I shot case after case of 9mm thru my P11 with no real problems. Same thing with their 7.62X39. Have used their 7.62X54, but wasn't impressed with the accuracy, and was downright disgusted with the accuracy of their .223. Still no functioning issues tho'. Tried the 22LR stuff because everyone likes it so well, but it wouldn't shoot well out of either of my favorite 22's.

No, no, not again! There must be a thousand THR and TFL treads re Wolf ammunition. Many of us will not use the stuff (why risk a $500+ firearm to save a few pennies), while others believe it is perfectly safe to use. I suggest you check the THR and TFL archives for in-depth information. I will offer one comment, however, they still use only steel cartridge cases and that seems to damages some extractors (and other components).
