Qualifications for CMP

I was reading some of the threads about applying for the CMP program. Apparently, the requirements are less stringent now. Is it true that a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) is now adequate to qualify for the program? Or does one still have to belong to an affiliated club? Tell me all about the application process and how long it took to get your rifle.
Also, the M-1 Garand comes in many variations. Which one do you recommend? I was thinking of getting one of the Danish ones. It doesn't need to be in top condition, but I want something in reasonably good shape.
Thanks

You still have to belong to an affiliated club, but your CHL will count as "marksmanship activity."
I'm looking for one too, not sure if I want to get Greek or Danish.

Thanks for your reply, Deej. On the website, it says it's possible for sign up for some of the clubs online for as little as $25. If my Texas CHL is a substitute for the shooting test, then I can just sign up for membership without ever showing up? In the Houston area, many of these clubs seem to be high schools, but does the club have to be in my state of residence?
Also, someone help us decide between the Danish and Greek Garands:D

Why not just join TSRA (http://www.tsra.com) (Texas State Rifle Association)?

Thanks. TSRA sounds like the way to go. I'll join them today for only $20.

I recently ordered a Springfield Service Grade M1 Garand from the CMP. Nine days (!) after I sent in my order FedEx delivered to my front door a M1 with a late WWII receiver with a mix of parts that had been arsenal rebuilt in 1965 and looked brand new. It needed no cleaning but only a little oil and grease. The stock was dirty and dinged but entirely servicable upon cleaning. Another satisfied customer. My only problem is that I'm thinking about getting another one!

I just joined TSRA for a year so I can order me a CMP Garand too. Gonna use my CHL for the shooting activity proof. Hopefully I can get a good service grade shooter. :D
A Garand would go well with my kraut K98 in the gun safe I think.

Thanks for all the help, folks. Plus, my contributions to TSRA will help fight the good fight.

StephenT,
Joining the TSRA is the way to go for the affiliated club requirement. I was unaware having a CHL was good instead of the "50 shots in sponsored competiton" requirement, but if it is, great!
Our club (South of Houston) has periodic John C. Garand matches, which are aimed (pun intended) at the 50 shot in competition requirement. Next one is in September.
If you have your Garand by then, please consider coming. If you don't have it yet, please consider coming anyway, since there will be an M1 for you to shoot - a lot of us bring an extra, and we have one member who has, like, 10 of them he brings.
The course of fire (all at 200 yards) is 20 rounds (+ 6 sighters) prone, in 20 (+6) minutes; 10 rounds prone in 70 seconds, 10 rounds seated in 60 seconds, and 10 rounds standing in 10 minutes. If you don't get all the shots off in the rapid fire stages, they will bring your target back up for you to finish the string. The 56 rounds of surplus ball ammo are included in the $15 match fee, and there is a short clinic on loading the Garand without getting your thumb mashed, rigging the sling, and so forth.
The point is, it is a fun match and Safety and fun are the only things anyone takes seriously.
You can reach me via PM. I'm not sure of the etiquette of posting too much specific contact information here, and don't want to be "advertising" - but anyone interested in the Garand Match is welcome.
Purrrs,

Thanks for the heads up about the match in September and the invitation, Bob. I'm definitely interested in joining more social shooting events in the area. Hopefully I'll have my rifle before then so that I have a chance to sight it in.
