Are most of your guns bought new or used?
Longbow
February 16, 2003, 02:34 AM
Most of mine are bought used in good condition. I tend to gravitate on the "used gun shelves" whenever I visit a gun store. I find that I usually get better deals on used guns, some of them even appreciate in value, like the few discontinued models I got. I seldom buy new ones anymore.
Anyone in the same boat?
P.S.
Refurb's count as new. Inherited ones count as used.

How about "an even number of each?"
Out of my handguns, 1/2 were previously owned. I adopted them to give them a good home :)

Long history here. Most of the RECENT ones (over the last 2 years anyway) have been new, so my voting "used" skews your poll.

I will buy a new gun on occasion but prefer used because you can usually find a good deal on a used gun or find a gun that is not made any more and a lot of the times the workmanship on some of the older guns is better than new.:)

Probably about 75% of my modern guns were bought new. However since getting my C&R the ratio for the total guns owned has sharply drifted towards used.

Considering that I collect post-war/pre-numbered Smith's, I'd say used.

Vast majority used. One of the great thing about every scare is that tons of people run out, buy there first gun, then, after it sits in a drawer for a few years, they sell it off. Lots of great bargains out there in used guns.

I voted new. The reason being, most of my guns I couldn't find a used one available at the time. I wouldn't pass on a decent used gun if it was what I was looking for at the time.

Since I collect older Smith & Wesson revolvers and milsurp rifles, most of my purchases have been of used guns. Some of which were very used. :)

It’s been awhile since I bought a new gun. After over a half century of experience I prefer the workmanship one finds in older handguns that is no longer viable because of economic reasons. Admittedly some of the new semi-automatics may (or may not) be better weapons, but this is not a concern to me. In the doubtful event that I have to defend myself I will depend more on marksmanship then magazine capacity. Meanwhile acquiring classics (especially for attractive prices) represent good investments that are also excellent shooters.

Probably about 30% of my firearms were purchased new. Blame it on that infernal C&R license!

I have found great deals on used guns. Some of them were almost brand new. A little patience and one can find exceptional prices no used guns. Probably 75% of may collection has been bought used.

I always check the used case at the range, never know when someone needed cash fast and left town without their baby:)
I like to own some unique pistols and calibers, and some arent produced anymore.

I usually get what I want when I have the money for it. If I see it used great, if I buy it new fine. So I don't know, lets see:
Handguns:
-Taurus 82 (since sold, should have kept it)- used
-Ruger P89- new (since sold)
-S&W 65LS- new
-Charles Daly 1911- new
-CZ 75B- new
-CZ 40B- new
-Bersa Thunder- new
-Taurus 605- new (since sold, plan to replace w/ new 85UL or used S&W J-frame)
-Remington 1858 blackpowder revolver reproduction- new
-Colt Police Positive Special- used
-S&W 586- used.
3 used, 8 new. However, that isn't due to preference and many of what I'll probably pick up over the next couple years will probably be used.
Long guns:
-Marlin 60- new
-SKS- very used
-Remington 581- new
-Mossberg 500- new (unfortunately sold it)
-Winchester 94 in 30-30- new
-Ruger 10/22- new
5 new, 1 used. In the next year or two I plan on a shotgun or two, a lever rifle in .357mag, a commercial bolt rifle, an AR (probably), a Mini-14 (maybe), an M1 Carbine, several bolt mil-surp rifles and (hopefully) an M1A. I'm sure I've left out a few but you get the idea. I will more than double (more like triple) my long-gun collection over the next year or two and I will buy as many used as I can find (and in the case of the mil-surp bolt rifles and M1 Carbine they will certainly have to be used).

I voted used, but after thinking it over I may have bought more new than used ones.
I buy them to use ,so a good used gun suites me fine. If I can't find a decent used one, or they are overpriced, then I put out the extra cash for new just so I can devalue them myself wearing the blueing off.

About 50/50 for me too. In fact, right now I own one gun that was new and one that was used but in almost new condition.

Out of all the guns that I have owned, 1/3 have been used in excellent condition and 2/3 have been bought new. I wouldn't think twice about buying a used gun if it was in great shape and the price is right. The price has been the determining factor when purchasing a new gun too. I've been fortunate to come across some great deals that I couldn't resist.

One of the first guns that I ever bought was a used gun and it was a piece of junk. Really turned me off to the used gun scene so I always bought new. Probably cheated myself out of some good deals that way.

Well, gonna skew the poll...I think.
I technically have only one new gun in years past.
I will work for guns.
I will barter for guns.
I will accept guns as gifts ( promotion, perks, bonus, B-day...)
New or used guns...I'm available ;)

Hrmm... I'd guess about 50/50 not counting milsurp rifles which would obviously skew the results. I usually try to buy a gun used if it's a pretty common piece or if I'm just wanting to check out something new.

About 75% of mine are new. I like buying new because I know for sure that they haven't been abused, but I have no problem buying used if it's a hard to find item or if it's in excellent or like new condition.

I used to buy new guns exclusively; unfortunately, High Standard is no longer in business, and Colt's current production Pythons are no better than Smith & Wessons.

I can't rightly recall the total number of guns I've owned over the years, but of them all, only ONE was bought used. Every other was NIB at time of purchase.
It takes a very unique or special gun for me to buy it used.

I prefer new, it's like that new car smell... just without the smell. It's nice to know I am the only one to have owned it, fired it (except the test fire) and cleaned it. But alas, like new (used) is just as good when I can save the money since I am not made of money. I try and go back and forth, some new guns, some used guns when I find the deal.

I'm trying real hard to remember the last new one I bought... Anyhow, I once knew this guy who was vocally proud of the fact that he'd "...only buy new guns!", and I was thinking "That's gotta suck, to never be able to own a milsurp 1911, a 5-screw Smith, or a 3-screw Ruger...". ;)

I'm still too new to handguns. I buy new (all two of them) because I don't know enough to tell the condition of used. If it is any good, why are they selling it?
As I gain experience I expect to shift to the "used" side of the spectrum.

Have to admit I've never bought a used gun. I'd rather spend a couple of months researching for a specific gun, save up for it, buy it new and then never sell it.
As I only average one gun every couple of years, would rather treat myself to new knowing I wasn't buying someone else's problems. JMHO.
Only sold two of my rifles in 35 years and that was to get money for another couple of guns I wanted more.:D
Safe shooting.

I have 2 used milsurp rifles a M38 and an Enfield No4Mk2. Everything else I have is brand new. I think I have psychological damage in regards to buying used, the result of experiences with a used brown 1980 Chevy Citation. I avoid used if I can.

I've bought only 1 used gun, my Ruger Redhawk. At the time the stainless line was not running at Ruger, and I wanted a stainless one in the worst way. I called everywhere, it seemed, til I found one. I was lucky in that it didn't seem to be used at all. Probably too much recoil for the previous owner.

I don't buy too many used guns anymore.
It's because the of the Internet. Now I know how many people do their own gun modifications.

Out of the 15 or so gun's I've bought in the last three years all were new. I've always been a little leary of buying used. If I didn't have as much money as I do I probably wouldn't hesitate to buy used though. A working used gun is better then no gun. ;)

Ditto!
I just look at the breach face and extractor groove if there's alot of copper marks, its probably used alot. Also the fit, finish, action and rifling tells alot too. Unless its a true collectible, I can get by with some of those mentioned.

About half of the ones I've bought in the last few years have been used. I found a small gun shop that sells used guns, as well as new. The used ones he sells (at least the ones I've bought) are in usually in really good shape. My son had a problem with one, he took it back and gave my son his money back. No hassle at all.
And I had one with a small problem. When I mentioned it he said to bring it in. I did and he fixed it no charge. Took him a half hour, but no charge. So I feel confident in buying used ones from him when I see one I like.

If the gun is 99% or LNIB I don't mind if its been "broken in" for me. Guns are much more durable than people give them credit for. The only exceptions are the lemons that people sell off sometimes.
So far I haven't run into them yet. Knock on wood.
