I think I want a steel frame & slide 9mm pistol. 5" barrel preferred, $400-ish. What are my candidates? Now remember, I'm in CA so my options are limited to what's approved for sale here :(

Is this for IDPA?

How about that single action Vertec? It's ugly and is above your price range but other than that.... ;)

What about the CZ 85 Combat!

CZ 75/85 in just about any of its configurations.

The basic 75B is inexpensive and very impressive- extremely accurate and reliable and it just shouts "quality".

The 75SA and 85Combat are a little more money but take this great gun to an even higher level.

With the exception of the 75SA (single action) and 75BD (decocker) all the full sized 75/85s are DA/SA autos that must be decocked manually if you want DA (not as bad as it sounds) but the trade off is a safety that can be engaged so the gun can be in condition one- "cocked and locked".

The 75BD like I mentioned above is your only option w/ a decocker in the full sized frame.

If you wanted to drop to a shorter barrel they also have some nice compact models.

Another option would be one of the BHP clones. The FEG and FM have great reputations and are both very inexpensive.

Most of the rest of the high value 9mms (both high quality and low price) that I know of are alloy instead of steel framed guns (Taurus PT92, Taurus PT911, Ruger P94, S&W 908 and 910) or polymer (Ruger P95, Springfield XD).

Taurus PT911 and PT92 are all metal...

So are the EAA Witness, CZ75, BHP, and its clone the FEG PJK-9HP...

Happy Hunting!!! :D

Try to find a Star Model 30, great gun, all steel, and very underrated...

Nope, I'm 'toying' w/ the idea of picking up a steel 9mm range gun. I was looking at BHP's, but the price turned me off. The price is fair for what it is, but a bit high for just a range gun...

Hey, how are the Stars? Accurate? Reliable? Dependable? I saw a used one recently w/ high caps.

I agree that the actual FN or Browning HPs are a bit high. However, for people like us there are some very good high quality clones out there.

The FM is made under license to FN in Argentina. They usually have a military finish so the finish isn't as nice but otherwise, being a licensed copy, it is an exact clone. They have a very good reputation and they are quite affordable (in most areas they are in the $300-350 range and even in expensive areas, like here, they are quite a bit under $400).

The FEG is a Hungarian made clone. They also have a good reputation and can generally be had for $200-250. The one that I got to shoot impressed me greatly and turned me from (at best) being neutral to the HP design to being a fan and desiring one.

I'm thinking about one of the two myself, or even waiting for my tax return and picking up both.

CZ 75 (great gun for the value)

CZ 75SA (exceptional gun)

Browning BHP (Classic design, terrible out of the box trigger--you'll likely need to get the trigger worked on). --you might find a used one for $400?

Fir $400 look into a CZ75B, IMI/Baby Eagle or Tanfoglio.

Browning BHP (Classic design, terrible out of the box trigger--you'll likely need to get the trigger worked on).

Usually, once the mag safety is removed, the trigger behaves a lot better. BHPs and the clones are great pistols, and tend to shoot very well.

The CZs, as mentioned, are probably the best of all worlds--accurate, steel, reliable, and just plain purdy to look at.

At your price point, CZ-75B.

Its never a good idea to remove factory safeties though, from a legal standpoint (a prosecutor could use that against a gun owner in a shooting possibly).

For your price point, the CZ-75 seems like the best choice. It's a bargain for the money...ergonomic, and very reliable pistols.

I dare you to cite an example of that happening. HINT: there aren't any.

Actually, I'm pretty sure all the Taurus PT92, 99, 100, 101 911, 940 have aluminum frames.

For an all-steel 9mm in your price range, I think you'd be very hard pressed to beat the CZ75/85 or EAA Witness guns. The CZ75B SA would be my first choice.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I didn't shoot by accident. :scrutiny:

A SIG 226ST w/ light rail for $400? I'll get 6! :D

Being in CA, my choices are limited. I think I'm down to CZ, Baby Eagle & a used BHP.

10-Ring, how about a Browning Hi-Power 'Silver Chrome' ??

It meets (well, the barrel is only 4 5/8" in length) all of your criteria except the price.. $599 !!:uhoh: Might be out of your price range.

If you were wondering, CDNN has 'em..;) :

Go for the CZ. It's all steel, meets your price point, and is as reliable and accurate as you can get for a gun at that price. I was so happy with my first, I had to buy another, prettier CZ 85 Combat.

The gunsmiths around here won't do that modification for fear of being sued. Its good to know though that there hasn't been any actual cases. Maybe they would start doing the mod if someone brought that to their attention?

Next weekend, I might have an opportunity to shoot a B-Eagle 9mm and a CZ 75. From just fondling the 2 in a store, I like the ergos of the B-Eagle a little more, I like the layout of the CZ more tho....we shall see
