Congress has recessed. Now, they are going under the McCain Feingold law soon - no comments by name of a canidate withing 60 days of an election by a national lobbying body. Check with the small ones, and read the Congressional Register to find out what these skunks are going to do behind our backs, or they will renew the ban, and you won't know who did it UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION! They count on American sheeple to have those 30 minute sitcom memories - no one will remember what they did 2/6 years down the road....

You guys who keep posting on this site and other web sites "9 days left"...." 6 days left".... "4 days left"... ......ARE BEING MUCH TOO SIMPLISTIC.

The anti's have another 7 weeks left (49 days) to SCREW YOU!..... Not just 4 days of September!

Keep an open eye for current events, and be prepared to do letter writing.
The Poloticians and the media can cause HAVOC during this long recess. They could have Bush doing a 360 on us if he receives thousands of letters pleading to renew the sunset. If he changes his mind he can readilly have a renewed ban signed in the 4 days!! (If not, they wouldn't be pleading with him right now.)

SO MUCH FOR YOUR "Only 4 Days till Nirvana".

STAY ALERT AND BE PREPARED!

Lawmakers to break recess
On Friday, key lawmakers announced that the Senate would interrupt its August recess for hearings focused on immediate legislative proposals.

Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairwoman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, and Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., whom the Senate leadership designated to head Congress’ action on the commission’s recommendations, told reporters that the goal was to report legislation to the full Senate by Oct. 1.

“Because of the urgency of this task, we will begin work right away, and we will hold the first hearing the first week in August,” Collins said. “So no longer will it be a sleepy quiet August around here.”

Added Lieberman: “How can we go about business as usual when the commission has given us a charter to make America safer?”

That part really scares the crap out of me :uhoh:

OK, here is the situation:

Both the House and Senate have left behind a few members to hold hearings on implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 commission. The large majority of both bodies has recessed and will not return until September 7. There is no quorum present in either body.

Both Sen. Feinstein, several press organizations, and the MMM plan a full-court publicity press during the month of August.

The MMM will be touring key battleground states in August trying to influence the election, if they can show success, it will definitely make the Republicans nervous. So far, not much success on their part though.

The press will be beating this issue into the dirt (and have been through July).

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy has time scheduled at the Democratic convention to preach on this exact subject.

Things look real, real good for us; but it isn't over until it is over. Your Senators and Representatives will be getting hit with the most anti mail they have received on this subject yet within the next month. Make sure that those voices aren't the only ones they are hearing on this subject.

If you haven't yet contacted them, it is even more urgent you do so now.

I spoke with one of the Aides to a WV Congresswoman on Saturday. She told me that:

- Congress goes back into session on Wednesday, September 8, not the 7th as the Calendar states. Write off Saturday as a working day as well. So, there are really three working days left to get this done.

- The pro-gun to anti-gun contacts they're receiving on this one issue are running 1,000 to 1 in our favor. The few pro-AWB calls they're receiving are from the lobbyists, not the "man on the street" or voters.

- The official legislative agenda for September in the House has been set, and the legislators have all received their copies. The AWB bill isn't on it.

- Congress has to pass 12 spending bills this year, and all of these bills must originate in the House. Only three of those bills have passed, so there are nine remaining. The House members want to get them done by October 3 so that they can go home and campaign during the last month before the election. So, they have four weeks to pass the remaining nine appropriations bills, which is going to take their focus off of everything else.

- If the bill in the House were brought to the floor, it would have to go through its four hours of debate the same as any other bill. Also, it would be amended with just about every pro-gun "poison pill" imagineable.

So yes, the anti's are going to try to yell and scream and make noise about the AWB sunsetting. I expect it to be mentioned by several speakers at the Democratic convention this week. However, by the time Congress goes back into session the Republican convention will have just ended, the focus will have changed, and focus will have shifted back to the national/international issues that drive Presidential Election politics.

That doesn't mean we can relax the pressure, as we've all seen the 11th hour bombs the anti's hurl. The restrictions on NFA firearms attached to the FOPA '86 are a good example. However, I'm feeling better about the AWB sunsetting than I was just a few months ago.

Even if it does expire we can't let up at any time. They could just as easily turn around a renew the same ban or pass a new one a week later or more likely after the elections. Also, just imagine the media outcry if something happens with a semiauto rifle, like the recent SKS killing, after the bans expires. The media would clearly link it to the ban expiring and then the push would be on for a new ban. So, even if the ban expires, doesn't mean they won't be banned again a week, or month, or year later.

doubt it will get much attention because of the coming election. unless someone wanted to play politics with it. Kerry has been trying to paint himself as a 2nd ammendment support and hunter. if he flops it would just hurt him more.

given the ignorant logic kerry will probably do it.

And if something does happen, depending on where it takes place, I hope that every RKBA organization and individual point out to everyone that it took place in a:

1) "May issue" state

2) Criminal Empowerment Zone (No Guns zone in a CCW state)

3) Another state/district where, like the Twilight Zone, the 2nd Amendment, in any form, is hardly or not recognized

4) Anywhere else where "Why would one want to carry a gun THERE??"

Where are our RKBA organizations in saying "Self defense is a HUMAN right!"?

Old people, animals (PETA), and children seem to have SO MANY rights - the rest of us are just $*#% I guess....

Do they ever though? Do they ever point out that a workplace or school shooting took place at a site where guns were banned? No. They just use it to fuel more gun bans in work zones (totally illogical).

Our workplace just posted a "No concealed handguns" sign. I brought it up and they said "it just seemed like a nobrainer". Yeah, no brains. Problem is the nongun people justs can't think about it in a rational way. They have this mental block in thinking about guns, and self-defense. They want to believe in the Safe Society and the Illusion of Safety. Carrying guns ruins that feeling of Illusion of Safety because they have to admit that the only thing keeping us "safe" is others respect for life and law, not the Laws themselves.

Bubbles makes great points about why the odds are really stacked in our favor now; but I wanted to put one of those points in context.

- The pro-gun to anti-gun contacts they're receiving on this one issue are running 1,000 to 1 in our favor. The few pro-AWB calls they're receiving are from the lobbyists, not the "man on the street" or voters.

This is a single district in the state of West Virginia receiving that response. Unless you live in that district, this doesn't apply to you. You own district may be a much closer battle and the Representative much less secure in his support or opposition of the ban. That is why it is imperative you keep up the contacts with your legislator - especially during August as the MMM is going to mount a publicity push on this and you can expect to see more contacts from antis being sent.
