Remington 1100
Reminton 11-87
Benelli
Whichever you think fits the best.

Smith & Wesson M66, loaded with .38 lead Plus P hollowpoints.
You can get to it a lot quicker than a shotgun, you can use it with a flashlight in the other hand, and it's harder for an intruder to take away from you.
If you insist on a shotgun, the Beretta M391 and the M1100 seem the safest semi-auto bets.

IMHO, the Benelli is the only one that I have seen approach the level of reliability and operability required for a HD shotgun. It is what I selected when I needed a SG that could be used one-handed.
Others may be great guns, but a malfunction in a fight is considerably more costly than one in the field.

Yes, there is a combat style Benelli that I am giving a lot of consideration. The problem is that I simply do not know anything about it. Reliability is utmost for HD use.

What I am looking at is a Benelli M1 Tactical. I have a Tactical Glock 35 in 40 caliber and I am looking for the closest thing I can get to a Glock shotgun.

Benelli M1S90, Beretta 1201FP, or my personal favorite, the Franchi 612 Defense. The Franchi is operationaly identical to the Benelli, but it uses a self-regulating gas system rather than inertial operation. The Franchi is a softer shooter and it seems to work with a broader range of ammo types.
I have little experience with the SuperX2, but from all accounts it seems to be a pretty good shotgun. I've seen too many Remington 1100s puke during competition to recommend them, although I love my 1100 LT-20 skeet gun.

Berretta M3 Super 90 combo Pump/Auto
Pricey due to the Klinton Gun Ban but it is a nice gun imo.

Try 1000.00 Pricey. Pick up a used 1187 or 110, or a saiga 12. its kinda tactical.

The handguns only real advantage is concealability. Long guns (specifically shotguns) hit harder (much more so when comparing the 12 gauge to .38 Special), are more accurate, easier to hit with, easier to attain/maintain profficiency with, offer a higher capacity, have a faster ROF, and penetrate less. You can mount a light on a shotgun. I don't know about speed, depends on the user.
