Do you use one? With or without solvent port? Do you run the jag/patch through to the solvent port, add solvent, then through the bbl?

Trying to decide if I really need one or not. It will be for my bushy upper.

it is very important if you are cleaning from the muzzle.

Yes I use one.
Mine doesn't have a solvent port.
It is very nice to be able to clean the barrel without getting solvent in the receiver.
I may be wrong, but to me, the point of the solvent port would be more important for cleaning from the muzzle end. You can insert the rod with no brush or patch in it. Then screw it on from the breech end, apply solvent, and pull it back through the bore.

Although I use one on my AR15s, it is more important on rifles that have a bedded stock or a wood stock where you definitely don't want solvent running down into the action. With the AR it is just more to clean that you might not have intended to clean.

It will be for my AR15. I'm still at a loss as how it works.

"I'm still at a loss as how it works."

You remove your bolt carrier and charging handle and the bore guide fits into the space where your bolt goes. It is nothing more than a hollow plastic tube. On the chamber end it has a rubber O ring to hold it in place. You simply run the cleaning rod through the plastic tube. Since you insert the rod from a point outside the action, the solvent doesn't run into the rifle's action and mag well. It also keeps the rod centered.

Despite seeming like another step to add complexity, I find its a lot easier. You can line up the rod with something you can see, and then just push.

I have never, otoh, gotten the point of the solvent port. It seems easier to just soak the patch before putting it on the rod.
