Rules.

Four rules.

Do you know them?

Do you always observe them?

I _hate_ seeing stories like this. Please don't become one...

WILLIAMSON COUNTY DEPUTY DIES AFTER ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

[Tue Jul 27 2004]

WILLIAMSON COUNTY -- Williamson County Deputy Dane Johns died Monday as the result of an accidental shooting while on duty, Williamson County Sheriff Tom Cundiff said.

Johns, 44, was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m. at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Cundiff said. The accident occurred, the sheriff said, when Johns' shotgun discharged as he was removing it from his squad car.

A deputy since 1982, Johns was named Deputy of the Year in 2003. His survivors include his wife and three children. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

The Illinois State Police is handling the investigation into Johns' death, Cundiff said.

Johns was the son of the late state Sen. Gene Johns of Marion.

What a shame. Just goes to show you that regardless of how long you have been around firearms the rules never cease to apply to you. My condolences to the officer's family.

Our biggest threat is complacency.

Condolences to the family.

:(

Long shift, bad shift, trouble at home, that stupid new eltee, the captain is a moron, got to work overtime tomorrow, geez, I'm tired, geez, I smell bad, I need to run, people are getting dumber and dumber, what a long shift . . .

The importance of training is the process of making gunhandling skills part of your mindset. People get in trouble because they cannot run their gear, handling must become automatic as there are many distractions in life or in a fight.

Of course, we all know that, now to put it in practice! Let Deputy Johns not die in vain! Get trained up!
