Are the service personnel who are now deployed to the 'sandbox' allowed to take/keep/use ANY personal weapons? In particular, are they allowed to carry personal handguns? How about edged weapons?

unless you're a SNCO, officer, or SPECOPS, it is almost impossible to take you're own firearm overseas. most servicemen have their own edged weapons on their LBV's, so i'm assuming that they're authorized. i know that i'll be taking mine if i get deployed.

God bless all of you who are/will be deployed! I just wish you could take your own backup weapons if you wish cause I believe the feel of a well-known close friend would sure make you feel better!
Keep your heads down and finish that mess over there quickly and come back to your loved ones soon!
AND THANKS!!!!

Several guys on the Himilayan Imports forum over at BladeForums have been donating blades to military guys shipping out. Based on reports from Afghanistan, the sight of a khukuri hanging from one's belt provoked many comments, such as "where can I get one of those." :D
The enemy was not a big fan of the khuks, however:
