Does anybody have any favorite loads for the 45 ACP using 231 powder (chrono data also appreciated)? Thanks.

5.4 with a 200 SWC will get you past IDPA power floor.

5.3 of 231 with Kead brand 230 gr. LRN 820 +/- in 5" Colt and 5" Kimber both.

Has very much same "feel" as factory 230 FMJ, and similar strike on target.

5.8 gr's with a 225 FP lead bullet will get you 870 fps from a G21.

I am new to handloading, so forgive me if this is a dumb question.

I am looking to make a light target load for my .45. But I don't want it so light that it won't cycle a stock Colt 1911.

I was thinking about a 5.0 grn of Win231 behind a 185 grn Rainer plated FP. I all so have CCI 300 primers and PMC cases.

Do any of you see a problem with this load?

My 1980 WW powder catalog for WW231 says
210 gr lead bullet 4.8 gr = 795 fps Target load
210 gr lead bullet 5.7 gr = 930 fps Full Power
230 gr lead bullet 5.6 gr = 795 fps Full power

For a short while WW230 was on the market and it was hotter than Bullseye but the Govt took it off the market and had it weakened to WW 231.

I load my 45 acp's only with 231. I use 5.6 gr. with both 200 gr plated semi wad cutters, and 200 gr moly semi wad cutters. both shoot very nicely, I use the plated bullets on my Glock 21, HK USP, and Sig 220, I use both plated and mollys in my 1911's

Been using 4.3 gr of 231 behind a 200 gr SWC for 10 years or so for a light target load in NRA bullseye competition. This will NOT make pwr factor for IPSC or IDPA.

I have been using 5.2 grains WW231 with the 200 SWC for quite awhile, and it is accurate and works great in my Kimber.
I would think that loads as light as 5.0 grains with a 185 grain bullet might be on the ragged edge as far as function goes in a stock gun.

5.2 gr 231 and 185gr SWCBB, CCI large pistol primers, feed and function great in my Colt 1991. Not a service type load, but fun to shoot.

Thanks for all the input folks. When I have some time, I intend to load up some loads with both 230 gr FMJ and some 200 gr SWC and give them a try in both my P-14 and my Kimber compact. I will give a range report when finished. Good shooting guys!

Well, I finaly got to try out my first reloads. I shot an IDPA style match last night and had a blast. IDPA scoring, but you could use any gun that can safely drawn from a holster. Any way, 5.0 grains of win231 pushing a 185grn plated FP will cylce a stock Colt 1911 just fine.

Recoil was light and I was printing nice tight double tapps all night. :) I am really enjoying this reloading thing!!

I can't wait till the next match.
