"Two Marine recruits were shot and wounded in the parking lot of Ross Park Mall yesterday, and the father of one of the young men said the whole dispute was over a chain his son bought at a flea market.

Even though it wasn't expensive, the chain was important to Robert Nix-Williams, said the young man's father, Rodney Nix of Blawnox. Attached to the chain were his mother's wedding ring and a gift from his father, a metal charm, shaped like a military dog tag, inscribed with a Bible verse.

The verse reads, "I will not be terrified or discouraged, for the Lord my God is with me wherever I go."

So when an assailant demanded the chain yesterday afternoon outside the mall, his son refused to comply, even when the assailant pulled out a gun."

Two Marine recruits? When's the last time Marine recruits were allowed to go to the Mall? We only got 30 seconds to go to the head.

Good article, Thanks!

I don't know if this mall, or locale allows CCW? The hard part with many malls is the vulnerablity of getting into and out the parking lots. With no CCW allowed, easy prey. I do find it interesting he used a glass bottle and did in fact defend himself best could until he lost his grip on the perp's wrist.

Glad they have the 2 suspects in custody, sounds like the recruit will heal up just fine and though will be reporting late, will still be fit to report.

45 Carry Two Marine recruits? When's the last time Marine recruits were allowed to go to the Mall? At first I thought that they went UA and got what they deserved, but it turns out that they aren't recruits. They were simply scheduled to enter boot camp in the future.Jackson was scheduled to go to boot camp in October and Nix-Williams was scheduled to enter basic training next month. (from the article)

PA state law is very CCW friendly, and I don't know of any mall that posts No CCW signs. The most they could do is ask you to leave, anyway, and how would they know to ask?

Yes, PA is very friendly, including the CCW recipricosity, I use my non Res FL while I'm up there from AR.

I ask my question, because IIRC Pittsburg and Philadelphia are "not" so friendly in regard to some local CCW stats. I didn't actually go to these two cities, I went around and about them. I was just told if I actually did to look more closely at the local regs.

I could not tell where this mall was located.

PA...still ain't figured out what the purple and yellow polka-dotted "express" lane is for, I was doing good to stay on the "blue route"...:D [j/k]

The mall is in the Pittsburgh area. IIRC, PA state law prevents local governments from enacting their own firearm laws. You might get hassled more in Philly or Pittsburgh than, say, Shelocta, but so long as you have your permit you're good to go. That said, I've only been stopped once by police while carrying, and due to the circumstances of the stop did not announce that I had a permit + firearm. (Notification is not required under state law, so my personal policy is not to notify during traffic stops unless a firearm is otherwise visible in my vehicle or I'm asked to exit my vehicle.)

Thanks for the clarification.

Yes , perhaps "hassle" better describes the warning I rec'd about the two big cities. I think at the time some "arguments" about the locals enacting thier own definitions was going on.

Being as I was out of town, talked funny ( according to you folks)...well...If I don't go somewhere where trouble might occur, I'm less likely to get into trouble.

Besides the CCWs , I had some other firearms I was using up that way. Err on the side of caution type deal.

Pretty country, good folks, I'm sure I will be back again.

I just get a bit riled up and curious when I hear of folks getting assaulted in parking lots and such. Folks "think" once inside it is safe, we know places are not even if the sign says "No CCW", bad guys don't pay attention to this. My other arguement is - one has to travel from vehicle to mall/business and then back again.

Does not take a genius to figure where to hang out and pick victims. This is why I inquired about locale and reg's.

Thanks for info, clarification, and article...

Update!

---

When they arrived at the vehicle, he (Nix-Wiliams - B.) placed two pairs of socks he had purchased in the trunk. He began walking toward the driver's side when one of the suspects approached, flashing a pistol, and said, "I like that chain. Take it off."

Nix-Williams looked at the suspect and started to laugh. He didn't think the weapon was real. "It looked like an air pistol," he said.

Nix-Williams said the other suspect started shouting to his accomplice, "Just pop him. Just pop him."

The suspect than tried to snatch the chain, but Nix-Williams grabbed his wrist and struck him in the head with the bottle.

---

Nix-Williams said the other suspect then shot Jackson and both men fled. Police believe a single bullet struck both victims.

As Jackson lay on the ground, he looked up at Nix-Williams and asked, "Have I been shot? I can't believe I've been shot."

And Nix-Williams said, "Yeah, dog, we've just been shot."

---

Jones and Davenport were charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Both were jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Nix-Williams was released from Allegheny General Hospital yesterday after being treated for the wound to his right arm. Jackson, 22, remained in stable condition at AGH.

Another article.

"I hit him in the head with my bottle of Mistic kiwi strawberry (juice)," Nix-Williams, 18, of Blawnox said Wednesday, hours after being discharged from Allegheny General Hospital. "I think that's why the bullet only hit me in the arm. He was probably seeing double from getting smacked."

...

Jones said he then heard a "pop," and Davenport (the accused shooter - B.) ran back to the car with a gun in his hand, telling Jones to drive away quickly, the affidavit states. Davenport then said, "I can't believe I just did that."

"It was an accidental shooting!"

Davenport then returned to the car holding a gun and told him to drive away, Jones said.

Davenport, according to Jones, then said, "I can't believe I just did that."

Davenport's father, Demetrius White, said he felt bad about the shooting.

"I am grateful no one was killed," he said. "It was an accidental shooting."
