Single stack 9x19 handguns.

I wish there were more single stack 9mm handguns. I'd especially love a HiPower clone with a slim grip and single stack magazine.
Why? I have small hands and relatively short fingers.
I know there are 1911 derivatives made by Springfield that use the 9x19, but they're a bit pricey. Otherwise I'd love to get one.
What single stack 9x19 handguns are there? I'm aware of only a few, and maybe there are some that I'm missing.

Kahr makes some nice single stack 9x19s. They have three different grip lengths (with 6, 7, or 8 rounds). They're double-action only, which may matter since I noticed your examples are all single-action. They should do nicely for someone with small hands.

I just picked up a couple of Star BM's at Aim Surplus.
Single stack, single action, all steel very reliable, (at least these two are).
Not bad for $129.95 plus tax.

I didn't know the Star BM was single stack. I like the looks of them, I'll have to see how they feel in the hand. Too bad CZ doesn't make a single stack CZ-75.
Thanks for the other suggestions. The Kahrs just look ugly to me, at least they do when I see pictures of them.
As for double action verses single action, I prefer that a gun be able to do both, but it isn't a requirement.

Shane333, they feel real good in the hand. If you get a good one, you'll love it. Mine had the best trigger I've ever felt on a production single action semiauto. Unfortunately, I'm not really a semiauto kind of guy, so I sold it.

You may like the Sig 225. Which may or may not be in production at any given moment.
It's a favorite LE sidearm and SIG alledgedly runs some about once a year or so. The leftovers get sold at a premium as they are not as common as the 239.

A man after my own heart! I too am a big fan of single stack 9mms. I have average sized hands but I like to be able to get a lot of my hand around the gun, it makes me feel like I have better control.
If you have short fingers and a small to medium hand, you owe it to yourself to try a Kahr. The K-9 is my favorite but they come in plastic frame and different bbl length and well as shorter grips. It is without question the finest single stack 9mm medium frame gun I have ever held. I can't say enough about the ergos of this work of art. It is what all other handguns are trying to be but somehow fall short.
I also have a Star BM, Star Firestar M-43, and Star B. All good handguns but they are SA and not in production anymore. The Star BM is a best buy but it may not be as reliable as a Kahr due to age. The SIG 239 and SIG 225 are well made guns also but they don't fit me as well as the Kahr.
I had a RAP 401 that is a DA/SA 9mm single stack. It was heavy for it's size but was reliable until the trigger spring broke. Being a S. African gun, there were no parts for it in this country so I got rid of it and took a big loss. If the gun is for self defense, I would suggest getting a modern in production gun so if it breaks, you can repair it or have it repaired. The older guns are often well made and good preformers at a great price but not worth the risk as a CCW. I think you are going to like the Kahr a lot. Don't be afraid of the price, they are worth every penny.

My choice would be a S & W Model 39. I've had one for over twenty years and is my home defense weapon. It's DA/SA, has a serrated grip frame and checkered wood grips. Sights are windage adjustable and are decent. It runs through factory or reloads without a hiccup. They were discontinued in the late 70s but I still see them at gun shows in the $250 to $350 range.

I have large, but not fat hands and I like single stack 9 mms. I own a SIG P225 that fits me perfectly and shoots extremely well. My experiences with the SIG P239 have also been very good. HKP7s are nice also, but very expensive. I wish SIG P220s in 9mm were available in CA. They are single stack, full size pistols.

I liked the Kahr (P9 Covert) for IWB CCW but would like a larger one even (such as the Tactical9 or the polymer TP9) more for range and play.
If you haven't tried them, the CZz feel much thinner to my hands than most double stacks as well as the previously mentioned BHPs with thin grips.
Many of the other options are higher in price but quality as well.

Seriously one of the SW series DA/SA pistols can be had for a lot cheaper and it's far more reliable.

Until I got all the waaaaaaaaaaay down to Dr. Rob's post I was begining to think that nobody but me had ever heard of a P-08.
If I do my part to get past the heavy trigger and the small sights my Luger is accurate as hell and comfortable as all get out, too.
I saw where a guy picked up a reasonably cheap one and put about a 6" bull barrel on it. He had the top back side of the barrel dovetailed and put an adjustable sight on it. It seemed to work really well, and I thought it was pretty darn cool.
Of course I have weird tastes sometimes. My wife would be quick to point out that I think everybody should have at least one aircooled Volkswagen in their stable.
Good old German car, good old German pistol...works for me.:D

You try any of these pistols and each one would be sorta what you want. or you could skip the trial and error phase and go straight to the P7.
Yes it is expensive, but no more so than the money you will lose buying and selling the others. :)

I must second the vote for the Star BM. To hold it is to love it. A tad heavy, but it's all steel. True, it is not made any longer. But for about $150 out the door, how can you miss?
To get mine would involve something about cold fingers.

Single stack 9MM's that I currently own:
Mauser P-08 Luger
HK P7 PSP
HK P7M8
Walther P-5
Of the bunch, I only carry the P7 PSP. Its a little slimmer than the M8 and I like the heel release mag. The Walther is a nice novelty, but its the same size as my CZ-75 PCR, so if I'm going to carry a 9MM, and can handle the size, I'd rather have the 15 rounds of the CZ, than 9 in the P-5.
That being said, my Luger is VERY accurate and has never had a failure to feed with FMJ. I've never tried hollowpoints in it as I don't use it for defense and the gun was designed for FMJ. Its a great shooter and a lot of fun to shoot. Picked it up for $350 about 8 - 9 years ago. Its a "VOPO" re-work of a former Nazi P-08 and still has all the original markings, but has been re-blued as part of the re-work, so its just a shooter, not a collector piece.

If you like the beretta 92 'look', then the single stack is for you. it is called the beretta 92 compact L, type M, and it is lovely for small hands.

Of all the ones mentioned, I have to give my preferences:
1. A good 1911 in 9mm. The commander size fits this caliber well. You can wick it up to 38Super, 9x23, or Major 9 if you ever want more speed, with just a new barrel (or a reamer!).
2. HK P7 PSP. I have two of these for carry.
3. I'm not a big SIG fan - just don't like DA autots - but I'd have to buy a P225 if I saw one.

To echo posts above, there are several good single stack 9x19s you should look at. In alphabetical order, I'd put the Kahr K9, the SIG P239 and P225, and the S&W 3913 (and it's S&W relations) at the top of your list.

I can't get enough of my new Sig 239. The gun acts like a full size duty gun at the range, but carries like the slim single stack it is. Especially important if you carry IWB.
Full 3 finger grip, great out-of-the-box night sights...slim profile. Cheap to practice with 9mm white box, but potent for carry with Corbon +p.
ONLY drawback I can see is 35-40.00 for extra mags. You wouldn't think an 8 rd 9mm mag would cost so much.
This gun is one of those 'keepers' that won't be traded or sold.

With the exception of the Browning and prior to the Glock, you were more likely to find a single stack 9mm in use somewhere in the world.

I have a steel frame smith 39 and an alloy frame 39-2, both are great guns the 39-2 should be about $300 in good shape. The trigger is Smith good, you can not go wrong.
The 39 is made from the best ideas of the Highpower and the P-38! This was America's first 9 mm auto loader and the begining of the "Wonder Nines". It is truley a piece of Smith & Wesson History.
