The receiver is stamped STEYR 1896.
I believe it to be military surplus probably WWII era, not sure On the right side of the but stock there was a couple holes that have been patched I believe these were for a military I.D. tag seems I read about that sort of thing somewhere. It is bolt action I have no idea what this thing is or what caliber it is. any info would be apreciated.
This thing has been sitting in a closet for over 25 yrs. Someone gave it yo my dad back then and nobody has been able to tell me what this thing is I'm just curiouse?
Thanks,

It's probably a Model 1895 straight pull.
The caliber is, I believe, 8x56R.
There was a bunch of surplus ammo imported a couple of years ago, but it can be kind of hard to find now.

Jedi_7.62, if the rifle you're trying to descibe is like the one pictured above then you have a Mannlicher/Steyr Model 1895. These were originally chambered in the 8x50Rmm Mannlicher caliber. Later Model 1895 rifles were modified to accept the 8x56Rmm Mannlicher cartridge. I would recommend having your favorite gunsmith inspect your rifle to ensure it's in safe working condition and verify the caliber it's chambered in. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help,
but I already looked up the Steyr manlicher 1895 and it's not it. The bottom hand guard extends about half as far forward as the manlicher. And there is no wood above the barrel, nor does it have the "pistolgrip" shape to the stock it is more straight.
I think it may be some form of 8mm. It appears to the naked and untrained eye to be slightly larger than a 7.62 round. The bore size that is I don't have any shells for comparison.
Thanks again
Did they make any variations to the 1895. Maybe a smaller "scout" version or something?

A sporterized one, perhaps?

There was the Steyr Model 1890 that were chambered in 8x50Rmm. These had a 19.5" barrel & were 39.5" overall. Jedi_7.62, are you able to post a picture of the rifle in question?
