Noise: Muzzle Brake -vs- Flash Suppressor

I am thinking about buying a AR carbine after the AWB sunsets (hopefully) in september and I understand that a muzzle brake can make the AR noticeably louder. Does a flash suppressor have the same effect as a muzzle brake on the AR's noise level? Thanks.

Most flash suppressors do not have the same noise issue as muzzle brakes. Even among muzzle brakes there will be different levels of perceived sound depending on the design and where you are standing in relation to the brake.

In a very unscientific experiment, I think I perceive that a good flash hider (Vortex) makes the gun slightly quieter than the same rifle with a plain muzzle. This might just be the reduction of the huge burning cloud of gas coming out of the barrel.
Comps are almost always much louder than a plain muzzle or a f/h.

When I am shooting the rifle I don't notice the extra noise. When I am on the line next to somebody with a brake, the extra noise is obvious.
I still get twitchy when I recall the time I shot next to Scott Evan's 16 inch braked AR10. BOOOOOOOOOMMMMM. George Hill was on the other side of him at the WC3gun. That night my left eye, and George's right eye were badly bloodshot. My eyes started to water as I typed this. :)
When I'm SOing, and running along behind the shooter, the difference between most MBs and FH is noticable. But it depends on the design of the brake. Some aren't bad. Others should be called Muzzle Loudeners. They turn recoil into extra sound.
