I guess there is too much competition out there.

I just saw that. What a shame. They made the best inexpensive pocketknives on the market. :(
I'm going to pick up a few Old Timers tonight so my kids (only one daughter right now, but we want more) will have them when they get old enough.

NO!
:banghead:
Schrade Old Timers--my first knife, the last knife I recieved as a gift. . . . they were classics. Damnit.
I too was waiting to purchase Old-Timers until my sons were old enough and responsible enough for their first pocket knives. Guess I'll have to pick up a couple now.

Yep, my first knife was a Schrade Uncle Henry.
Sad to see one of the good companies go down.
Keep buying that cheap crap and you'll see more of this.

I've had a coupla Uncle Henrys myself. When I see that gaudy crap from Asia for 99c, I know how hard it is to make a buck for a legitimate mfr.

What's scary is the number of people who'll buy crap made by Fury, M-Tech, and the other Chinese copycats rather than buy a quality knife from Schrade for the same amount of money. I've never worn out an Old Timer. I've lost them, broke blades by prying, etc, but never had one wear out or fail because it was junk.

I have 6 Schrades that I'll keep safe now. I recently gave my nephew my Sharpfinger as his first knife. just like my uncle gave me. I'm glad I did, but now I have to run out and get another to complete the collection

I expect someone will purchase the tooling and trademark.

This is terrible. Old Timers - just worked and held an edge. Never discount a Sharpfinger to do its job - even tho not as pricey as some - it is a workhorse. The one bladed liner locks - big and smalll, the....the...I could go on.
Even if one collected and used CASE knives ( like I did) you had plenty of Shrades - and used them.
When we lose CASE and Zippo - the world will have officially gone to hell in a handbasket.
I'm with hso - keep buying that cheap crap....

I will miss this company. I have an Uncle Henry stockman in my pocket as I type this. And I gave my Grandfather an Old Timer stockman last month to replace a knife he lost.
These were great, workhorse knives at a good price.

I've got four of these great little slip-joints in the pipeline -- 194OT, 96OT and two 34OT's. These are all high carbon, non-stainless blades. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

This really is sad. I like all my Schrades, and I've got a little 3-blade Old Timer pocketknife that spent a lot of time in my pockets. (Just looked in a desk drawer and found a 5" fixed blade Old Timer--what does Old Timer mean, anyway, these two knives couldn't be more different?) Anyway, I hope whatever company picks up the name, if any, actually cares about carrying on the tradition, but I'm not terribly optimistic.

Sad indeed. I bought one of these 100 year anniversary knives as a tribute. I guess I could've bought more in the past to add to my very small collection.
I wish I still had my old Schrade pack knife, the 4 blade one with the can opener, awl, and two blades. That was my favorite knife as a kid.

I also see that WalMart has them for $17.95.

I have a Schrade IXL, 3 5/8" blade, single blade lockback, ivory grips w/ hallmarked silver bolsters. Blade is marked Schrade IXL Wostenholm at the base of the blade, and this is also etched on a banner on the left side of the blade, lightly, along with Sheffield, England. This is only vivible if the blade is held at an angle.
I bought this knife used for $40 over 20 years ago. The previous owner had carried it in his pocket ant the silver was dinged. I have carried it (more carefully) and used it for hunting for several years, then put it away. The scales are yellowed ivory or maybe bone. (They have a slight pattern, almost like stripes, like old ivory gun grips.)
I am not a collector, but I want to know how to preserve this knife, and any information on it will be welcome.
I'm sorry to hear about Schrade...I have used their knives since Cub Scouts, over 50 years ago.
Thanks for any help.

They were the everyman's knife for the man that knew what good steel was. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer men know good steel.
I lament the passing of Schrade.
