4 Screw S&Ws

I know the location of a couple of old M&Ps that I can probably pick up for aroun $150 each. They are quite old, but in good shape. The only thing slowing me down is that 4th screw on the side plate. Am I concerned about nothing? Is it more desireable from a collector stand point? Give me some guidance.

4 & 5 screw models do have more of a collector value in general than the 3 screw guns. Mechanically there is nothing to be concerned about. All of my Smiths (save one) are 4 & 5'ers.

That upper side plate screw was a bit of a PITA as they tended to work loose. The old 4 screw and 5 screw (the 5th is the one for the cylinder stop spring in front of the trigger guard) guns were beautifully made and collectors love them, but those changes really were improvements and, of course, kept costs down.

What Jim Keenan said...
They do carry a slight premium, and always get me sighing things like "They just don't make 'em like this any more" whenever I handle one...

I have a five screw M&P. They aren't as rare as one is lead to believe. They are strudy guns, so there are quite a few of them around, as you can see at any gun show. I agree with the rest of the gang.

$150 is a good price. Go for it.
