i've been musing the forums and looking through gun shops and catalogs trying to find a bolt gun for fun(not quite ready for an AR15). i have a 1710D and that's fun; a rem 725 that's too nice and too expensive to shoot. have spent most of my shooting time with shoguns and .357. getting and itch for an "inbetween" rifle with lots of cheap available ammo. i'm looking at a beautiful MITCHELL'S mauser. also been looking at .223 in a new gun. i would like opinions and comments because i can only buy one gun:( :scrutiny: :cuss: :barf: :banghead: please help rjk

If ya nose around the shows enough you are bound to run into a Enfield someday . The #1MKIII/2A would be nice 'cause the 7.62 nato ammo is cheap . The standard #4MK1 or MK2 would be nice too , but ammo is a little more cash .
Ten round mags are more fun than five d'ya think ?:scrutiny:

If you want a commercial rifle, any of the Savage, Remington, Winchester, CZ, Tikka, Howa bolts would probably make you very happy. And .223 is probably the right cartridge for "intermediate" center fire fun at low cost. All will be in the $400-$500 range.
If you want milsurp, for 1/4 the cost, then Enfield is a good choice, but so is Noisy Magnet errrr, Moisin Nagant, or a Mauser in 8mm.

Don't buy the Mitchell Mauser. No matter what the hype says, it is a Yugo M48 and they can be bought at half that price elsewhere.
If you want cheap ammo, .308/7.62 NATO is one way to go. The cheap 8mm ammo is almost all corrosive primed and cleaning is a pain.
One way if you are not worried about collectibility, is to buy one of the various Model 98 Mausers (avoid the older models) that have been rebarrelled to .308. Plenty strong and good shooters.
Other alternatives in that caliber are the commercial rifles already mentioned, all excellent.
